ArtStudio for iPad – draw, paint and edit photo – Lucky Clan

We did a review on an app several months ago named Inspire which was a kickass sketching and drawing app of epic proportions… Skip to today and you’ll learn that we just completed a walkthrough of the ArtStudio iPad app. Both of these apps are awesome! There is no room to complain with either of them… You can draw anything from scratch with these digital canvasses.

Did we find differences in the performance, features, usability? Of course! But we found many similarities as well. This app I would venture to say is much closer to actually harvesting a photoshop type experience on a tablet. I just can’t help wondering who would of thought just a few short years ago we’d be drawing freehand or with stylus pens on mobile tablets like the iPad using apps designed to work like adobe photoshop.

With apps like these the future is now and you are only bound by your own abilities as the develops have thought of everything. The Art Studio app is also available for iphones but we reviewed the iPad version. In doing so I sent a complimentary promocode to my mother who is an accomplished artist and asked her to whip something up for us… Unfortunately I am still waiting ;-( Not because she doesn’t want to help out but because she doesn’t know how to use her iPad… Arghhh! So I turned to my 10 year daughter who fancies herself as a budding young artiste herself and thankfully has fully embraced the technology.

This is the result of her first effort…

It might seem simple enough but would you be surprised to learn the background and hair were penciled in by our 6 year old. Seriously!

The two worked feverishly on it. I did help a bit with the menu options and showed them how to create layers instead of using the undo feature which BTW also can also be used as a redo and has unlimited steps in either direction.

The toolkit on the side panel is very handy and easy to navigate into. You can select from 15 or so tools including pencil, wetbrush, dry paintbrush and a couple we used which were smudge, blur and spray.

I will say we were having a bit of difficulty with the select tool on pinch. Meaning we would use our thumb/index pinch motion outward to zoom in and a few times the app would leave a selection area on the screen. In fairness I have often noticed this happening to me in photoshop. The undo feature did not deselect so we used the crop option which seems to reset everything then off we’d go again. I stress this is not a big deal just thought I would mention it incase you get stuck and need a fix.

Another cool option the app has is the import feature which lets you place a photo on the canvas. You can then create layers to trace the photo add you own special touch to the piece. We are in the middle of a big project doing just this. The idea was to grab a picture taken of the family last year around christmas and customize the photo. We used one taken at a santa grotto which had all of us, Santa and even Ms. Claus in it.

We’ll post the results of that project at a later date once we get it completed but you get the idea. You do not necessarily need to be a great artist to create wonderful pieces of art with cool apps like this one. You can use technology to your advantage and get those creative wheels rolling real easy with the ArtStudio App.

As far as we are concerned Art Studio should come standard with every iPad. If you know anyone that is into doodling, freehand illustration or simply just loves to draw please recommend this to them. Better yet send them a link to the review so they can have a look.

The app is available in iTunes for both the iphone and ipad. It is a perfect drawing tool and a great resource.

SlapApp the Virtual Slap App

We are very pleased to announce that the one and only original virtual slap app is now once again available on iTunes. The app is in it’s original form and we are very excited to be able to offer it for free.

The SlapApp App was one of the first 50k apps listed for sale on iTunes and was a great success having had 10′s of thousands of downloads through 2010.

Stone Packer Pro Addictive Gameplay

StonePacker – Gadnell & Associates

It took me a while to understand the concept behind StonePacker Pro. With an innovative system of gameplay, it was refreshing to try out this game. Think Tetris, but on a much harder scale.

In StonePacker Pro, players have to well, pack stones as per the game title suggests. Players start off each level with a certain amount of stones (They appear to be more of metallic blocks), where they have to arrange them through swiping in various directions so as to compress them and get rid of any gaps between them. However, at different intervals of the game, more stones will drop from the top of the screen thus making the game harder. This is just like the Tetris series, except that you have to control more than one game piece at a time.

A test of both your wits and reflexes, StonePacker Pro will not only have you thinking strategically on where to move the blocks but also think fast so as to clear the incoming rounds as quickly as you can. The game ends when you can no longer make any further moves, a brain teaser of sorts.

While StonePacker Pro lacks in the aesthetics department, it more than makes up for it with addictive gameplay. Everything is kept to a bare minimum, with no distracting animations graphics to distract players from their game.

StonePacker Pro deserves much credit for treading on unchartered waters. For $0.99, this is one game that is definitely recommended to be downloaded.

Not only do the icons grant access to commonly sought after features, but Inspire Pro also makes use of gesture controls for certain functions. One example includes drawing a circular pattern around brushed lines. This activates a blend function of sorts that will smudge the ‘paint’ on the canvas, thus blending different colors together beautifully without looking awkward.

The instructions are precise and plentiful

As far as details are concerned, Inspire allows artists to tweak the settings as per their whim and fancy. The options are extremely in-depth, allowing for users to adjust the size of the brushes but even the intensity of the colors. The different settings menus allow for advanced users to change even minute details to achieve that final, amazing masterpiece.

Tips Tricks and Hints abound everywhere

As previously mentioned, Inspire brings the genre of image creating tools like Photoshop up a notch. While not quite an image editor like the latter, Inspire allows for brilliant works of art to be created. In fact, with the cutting edge technology incorporated into the app, even novices with no prior artistic experiences can set about to create something that is indeed inspiring.

We think it is safe to say that the Inspire Pro app for IOS is simply amazing. Having been in and around design and graphic arts since early childhood it never ceases to amaze how new technologies keep exploring the limits of ones creativity. We can only imagine what a superior tool such as this would have produced from the likes of Picaso or Van Gogh and though we will never know its irrelevant as a new breed of artist with that calibur will exploit the capabilities of this devise to all of our delights. Personally we think it would be a good idea to open a wing in the Metropolitan devoted completely to virtual canvasses. What do you think?

Temple Run

Temple Run – Imangi Studios, LLC

Steal a sacred artifact in TEMPLE RUN by Imangi Studios and get chased to death by a horde of mutant monkeys in return. Fair enough. Though quite an absurd plot idea, it serves its basic purpose in setting the stage for one of the most addictive iOS games ever. This is one game that will keep you on your toes, and constantly challenge your reaction skills as well as hand-eye coordination.

Level objective option menu

In Temple Run, players control a klutz of an archeologist who decides to explore a sacred temple. The protagonist decides to make off with some hidden treasure sealed within the compound and is met with angry demons bent on claiming his life. Players control the archeologist with well-timed swipes on their device screens where swipes in different directions will allow the hero to jump, change directions, or slide under obstacles. The main objective of the game is to run, as far as you can away from those nasty monkeys that look like a cross between a regular ape and Venom from Spiderman.

Escaping from the tombs

On a side note, the seemingly endless stamina of our hero in this game is very impressive.

The learning curve of Temple Run should not bother new players. Each new game starts off slow, with the speed and tempo of the game increasing gradually over time. This allows first timers to try their hands on mastering the controls of the game. A tutorial also enhances the experience with the detailed description on navigation it provides.

Top up options

Temple Run also includes a slew of objectives and rewards to unlock. Each objective requires players to fulfill a certain task and when unlocked, boosts the score multiplier in game. In each game, players are to collect coins to boost their scores. These coins can also be used to purchase power ups and additional characters, as well as wallpapers to accessorize your device. These extra perks give players something to look forward to, rather than run of the mill game centre achievements.

As a free app, Temple Run is a must to download. Another nice feature is Twitter integration, so players may boast of their high scores to the world. This is definitely one of the best apps yet on the app store.

Egg Punch App Naked Chicken Exposed

Egg Punch – Pixel Juice

Essentially mini golf without a putter but with an egg instead of a ball, Egg Punch gives an entertaining take on the otherwise seemingly boring genre. In this game, a bunch of rabbits steal the feathers of a bathing bird, and our poor bird now left in the nude has to set off on a quest to recover his feathers. Think Foghorn Leghorn from the old Looney Tunes cartoons of the past.

Additional options for play

While not quite having the punch claimed in the game title, Egg Punch does deliver a fairly decent game play experience. Players guide the egg around what appears to be a farm of sorts, navigating it to the rabbits’ hole at the end of the obstacles similar to landing golf balls into the cups found in mini golf. Navigation is done by launching the egg at breakneck speeds, allowing it to bounce off the walls and fences barricading each level.

A burning question would be how the egg can possibly take so much impact at such speeds and not crack?

Creativity wise, Egg Punch is unique in a sense that it is totally different from conventional mini golf games. This is mainly attributed to the fact that players have to aim to collect as many feathers as they possibly can while playing the game. This drastically increases the number of moves required to complete the game. This adds to the level of difficulty as players now have to think strategically on how to reach the rabbit hole as fast as possible. On the bright side, pipes and barn doors are available as warp portals of sorts, so use them to your advantage.

Egg selection options

On a final note, Egg Punch is a decent app to download given its status as a free app. With power ups and upgrades available for unlocking, the app is definitely something that will involve much of your time. However, while it does offer a special concept that shatters the norms of mini golf games, the changes are only aesthetic upon closer inspection in a sense that only the setting of the game and an added plot changes things. Still, this is one app that should be given a go.

Different from most mini golf games (but see “Cons” too)
Upgrades to keep players enticed.
Cutesy graphics appeal to players of all ages.

Cons:

Changes are only aesthetic as there is hardly any difference based on game play alone.

oooloo – Lazy Appz

Lazy Productions is a fittingly apt name for the developers of Oooloo. If you have bad personal organization skills or need something to record your memos but want to save yourself the hassle of going through dozens of notes and free yourself from clutter, this is definitely the app for you.

Cool folder features for saving notes and to do lists

Essentially an upgraded version of the built-in “Notes” application, Oooloo not only allows you to jot down quick notes, but also gives you the added convenience of adding images into your memos. It took me quite some time to get used to the many little features in the app, not very necessary but nonetheless proved to be very useful.

Oooloo gave me a great impression of it right from the very beginning. With it’s clutter-free user interface, everything bit of your information is presented to you without becoming an eyesore. Folders allow you to sort out all your bits and pieces and these folders can be further organized themselves through dividers. All this can be done with just a few simple swipes and taps. The developers did a great job with their choice of colors too, for the app doesn’t have certain corners sticking out like a sore thumb, and everything is seamlessly integrated into each other.

oooloo lets you prioritize notes in a color coded fashion

Folders include the default “To Do”, “Contacts”, “Calendar”, “Notes”, “Images”, and even a sharing folder where you can share your documents with other users of the app. Not a necessity but definitely good to have. You can add your own folders, and customize them with by selecting from a plethora of icons. You can then mark your notes within the folders in order of importance, through the colored blips available at the side.

One thing I don’t like about the app though is that while you have different categories such as a to-do list and a contacts tab, everything you put inside is more or less the same. They are just basic notes where you can jot down bits of information, no matter the choice of category you put them in. Of course, one can argue that this gives a wider array of options at your fingertips.

All in all I would say that this is definitely a great app to have. As a free app, it allows you to store a maximum of 30 notes. However, you might want to upgrade to the premium version with no limits at all.

Pros:

Well Organized, no clutter.
Simple to use and understand.
Useful to get your tasks sorted out.

Cons:

Not much variety on types of notes.
30 note limit (removable with in-app purchase)

The game starts with how humans have progressed and made their presence in space by exploring new planets and other objects in the universe. Inter-space travel has resulted in space hijackers and kidnappers, and space police to control them. The game makes you the super confident and brave space cop, Kaptain Brawe. My mission was to rescue 2 alien scientists who had been kidnapped. It all sounded very serious but as I progressed the storyline became quite entertaining.

The game has been set in 4 unique planet surroundings. There are over 40 different locations in the gameplay with amazing graphics for each. So there I go jumping into the spacecraft.

Kaptain Brawe keeps switching between three characters – Brawe, Luna and Danny as he meets up with numerous other personalities. These include characters in the form of space pirates, secret agents, interstellar government and so on. The storyline goes through space conspiracy, quests and general chaos.

I could play in 2 game modes. Hard Mode – I had to choose between the hand and the magnifying glass to interact with objects on screen. Casual Mode – The hand and magnifying glass were chosen for me and there were lots of hints provided. The question mark icon proved very useful as it showed all intractable objects on the screen. Even the exits are visible as arrows on clicking the question mark. The journal at the bottom left of the screen showed a list of tasks I must finish.

The look and feel of the game is similar to the point-and-click adventure games such as Telltale games. The initial download is free but once I finished the tutorial part, a payment of $4.99 has to be made to continue the play.

To sum it up, Kaptain Brawe – A Brawe New World is a challenging yet humorous gameplay about finding items, questioning characters and combining everything perfectly to solve puzzles. It has a brilliant soundtrack and I felt as if I was watching an old adventure flick. The amazing graphics combine hand-drawn backgrounds with 3D character models. The game scores in the retro look and feel but for new age kids who are used to playing modern adventures with full voice casts will get disappointed. The company needs to bring in more innovation for a longer app life.
