Diacarta is quite different from other daily planners. First off you are presented with two separate pages and clocks for each day (one for A.M. & one for P.M). A simple swipe of the finger toggles between the A.M. & P.M. time frames. This alone is a creative and unique way to juggle your daily tasks. If you wanted to go even further back or forward in time you would simply continue to swipe left or right accordingly, which would take you through the days one by one. Of course you also have a calendar view if you need to get to a specific date.

Users can select from pre-created icons and drop them around the clock by the appropriate time. There are a ton of cool little icons to pick from; icons like a coffee mug, telephone, golf ball, fork and knife, airplane, even an arm pumping iron for those gym sessions you’ve been meaning to schedule. If by chance the app doesn’t have an icon that suites the subject that’s OK because the developers also included a blank/generic icon just for the occasion.

All events you enter have a name and location area along with start time, end time and a details section where you can log notes. Just double tap the icon to bring up the details page, then save.

“Monthly view” brings up the full calendar so you can manage larger timeframes with ease. Any day with scheduling information gets a symbol next to the date so you can easily tell which days have events.

The design scheme and overall layout of Diacarta gets an A+. Its detailed icons, smooth color palette, and button placement all work well, creating a friendly atmosphere that’s fun to use and efficient at the same time. Clean, simple, and effective. It took me like 5 minutes to figure out how to use the app, then it was off to the races as I began to fill up my calendar with event icons.

Now Diacarta is one slick app, but there are still some features that I’d love to see included at some point in the near future. The main user related issue I see is that you cannot set up a repeat for daily or weekly. Also it would be nice if it could sync with your calendar app and tie into sounding alarms – not sure if that’s even possible, but it came to mind. Diacarta has no instruction page but it doesn’t really need one either as it’s pretty intuitive for the most part. Finally, there is a logo button in the lower right hand corner that does not seem to do anything when pressed. (**UPDATE**: The star actually allows you to mark events as completed, click the star button then the icon to mark as completed.)

Overall Diacarta delivers an engaging and unique experience for your daily planning needs. The developers have merged usability with a creative concept and this can be a potent combination.  Future updates should make this app one of the best in its class. If you are looking for a new approach at  staying organized and want something that’s fast, visually based, and fun, this is one app I’d recommend.

If you’re looking for a new way to manage your life then you will want to give Voodo 2 a try. I’ve been using it for a several weeks now and have been pleased with the results. Being able to import in my existing Google calendar and manage my tasks has been an easy adjustment. I’m a big fan of combining the calendar with geolocating features on the iPhone as it really adds something that was never possible before. I’m all about streamlining my life and using whatever I can to help make things easier for me and shave time off my day from every day tasks. Voodo 2 is a great help with this.

Opera Mini by Opera Software ASA is loaded with neat features, though it also lacks a few key features Safari provides so really it’s nice to have both browsers to choose from, hey it’s FREE so why not?  The main thing that stands out with Opera Mini is the speed. The developers claim, “Use our powerful servers to compress data by up to 90% before sending it to your iPhone, so page-loads are lightning fast“. So you get optimized performance for faster downloading times. In the tests I ran, this was definitely an obvious advantage over Safari. In addition to the fast load times Opera Mini also provides features like:

• Speed Dial gets you to your favorite Web sites with a single tap
• An address field with auto-completion means you type less
• Tabs allow for multitasking with several Web pages
• Bookmarks can be easily managed and accessed

The menu tool-set icon in the lower right corner has a convenient and simple-to-use interface that provides you with a number of functions on the fly like bookmarks, history, start page, saved pages, settings, find a page, and help. Also the settings page has even more detail oriented adjustments like Image Quality, Font Size, Mobile View, and Full Screen, making customization a breeze.

There’s no pinch and zoom functionality which was truly missed. Instead there’s Opera’s optimized tap-to-zoom, with just one level of zoom. This zooms in and centers the specific section that you want to view. Upon initial loading of a page, the font is really tough to read on most sites.  You’re either zoomed all the way out or all the way in, there is no “in-between” view that can be achieved.

It’s always a good thing to have multiple browsers to select from. Certain websites simply perform or just look better from one browser to another. I have “go-to” sites that I use for Safari, then others that work great on the Opera Mini. If it’s an image intensive site that takes a long time to load, I would recommend using the Opera Mini for it’s speedy access to the page. But I’d still say that I plan to do the majority of my browsing in Safari. Opera Mini has a lot of updates to do in order to get it up to par (let’s not forget it’s their first crack at it on iPhone); the page rendering isn’t anywhere near as attractive and organized for phone viewing, on occasion the text formatting is quite off. I was unable to play videos on the sites I visited while I did this review, (Safari had no trouble with the videos) and overall Opera Mini has a different feeling to it because it abandoned a lot of iPhones standard functionality like the pinch and zoom, plus the copy/paste text function is different, (more cumbersome). But don’t let these drawbacks sway you from trying out this app. It has plenty of unique features that make at a great addition to your browsing arsenal. It’s not a replacement to Safari, but instead a handy alternative that you’ll want to use for a different browsing experience on certain websites.

Pic2shop by Vision Smarts is a clever application that allows you to actually scan the barcode by using the built in camera in your iPhone (Please note this app will NOT work on the iPod touch because it does not have a built in camera). Simply download the free application, point the camera at the barcode until the red line turns green, then instantly find out if the product is a deal worth taking or if its cheaper somewhere else. The app runs a price check on Amazon and other competing sites so you can be a savvy shopper on the go and get the best deal possible.

Now for someone like myself, I find the concept of pic2shop quite practical and convenient. I’ve always wanted the ability to QUICKLY run price checks on specific items that I come across while out shopping. A lot of times you just simply take the stores word for it, (even if the product is on “sale”)  and purchase the item, only later to find out that you could have gotten the identical item for much much less. Thankfully with an application like this you can run the price check and see just how good the deal is.

The app comes with an important additional feature that allows you to manually type in the barcode numbers in case the camera scanner has trouble reading the UPC. This was something that I definitely had to go to on occasion as I experienced some difficulty with certain products. Some items scanned instantly, while others just wouldn’t read and had to be input manually, which takes a little longer but still gives you the same end result.

Putting pic2shop to the test, I discovered that even though the app has some room for improvement, it’s an app that I want on my phone. I see most people getting real use out of something like this. Yeah, there were times when I had trouble scanning and had to manually type (lighting, phone position and distance from the product all play a part in getting good results), and there were also a few times when I had to re-enter the UPC code to get the app to run the check as the first time it came up with “no results”. But more often then not the app worked as advertised and I got the information I needed. The app is running ads at the top, but that’s a small price to pay for a FREE app that gives you usability. There are similar apps in the app store that are priced around $1.99 so pic2shop is definitely a value in itself. I’m quite sure that all my shopping experiences will be different from this point forward now that I have pic2shop. Pick it up today if you want to save a few bucks on your next shopping spree.

Believe it or not this app actually works.   I was able to type a text on my first try with my head turned and eyes closed.  Everything within the app is communicated verbally the moment you launch it; “StealthType Activated”.  To get started you first need to setup your contacts which requires looking at the screen.  To add a contact, just choose someone from your iPhone contacts list and record yourself saying their name.  Recording the name allows you to select it later without looking.  You can add as many contacts as you like.  The app home screen displays as many as 6 contacts without requiring you to page down.  If you find that you use certain contacts more than others you can arrange them any way you like using the edit option on the contacts page.  Once you’re all setup all you have to do is plug in your headphones, fire up the app, look away, and start touching the screen.  StealthType SMS will pretty much do it all from there.

StealthType SMS definitely works.  The one thing I didn’t like about this app was the actually sending of the text message.  How so?  Well, everything leading up to the actual sending of a text works as advertised.  It may take a little while to get the hang of, but you can definitely pick a contact and type a perfect message without looking.  However, to send the message StealthType SMS requires you to paste it into the standard iPhone SMS window and then press send.  You definitely have to look to complete this step.  So in the end, you can’t technically complete everything without looking.

I really like the concept of this app but I find some aspects of it contradicting.  The fact that you have to wear headphones for it to work makes it seem conspicuous to me.  Scenarios where I would want to be able to send a text without looking like I am is while in meetings, in school, while at dinner, that kind of thing.  Putting headphones on in any of those situations would attract more attention then me looking down to type.  So, even though it works really well, and totally does exactly what it says, I don’t really see people using this frequently.  It’s probably more of a novelty than anything.  That being said, if an update is made where you can send the text message from within the app without having to paste it on another page, then I think that’d be a major help and could see this being a really great app for the visually impaired.

GraphicTask uses icons positioned around a center point as a means to interact with your daily tasks. You’ve got icons for all types of tasks, and you can also take pictures to use as icons as well. When creating a new task you can set a due date, select a category (which defaults to the apps icon used that specific category), select a project, set a priority level, and finally set an alert. Then save it and you will see it as a cool little icon that can be positioned anywhere on the screen.

The tasks icons are arrayed around the center of the screen based on their due date and are updated daily. The more important a task is, the closer it is positioned to the center of the screen. Tasks that are later in the week are positioned further away from the center point. But you can still edit the position of all your tasks by entering the edit mode, then touching the icon and dragging it to another location. If you want to see a task you simply touch it, which brings up a little window with the task at hand. You can then edit, delete, mark it complete, or even email the task. A nifty interface with easy to use controls makes viewing and editing tasks simple and intuitive.

While I love the overall theme of GraphicTask and think the idea of a visual interface with icons is a great way to organize and interact with daily tasks, I found myself struggling a bit at first trying to figure out now the app functions.  It has a lot of unique menus that take some time to figure out, and the icons don’t have any labels associated with them so you’ll need to memorize what the icons mean for them to make sense.  The main point is you will have to spend some QT with GraphicTask to familiarize yourself with the app before you can get any real use out of it. But if you are willing to spend the time doing this you’ll find that the app does have a lot of cool features that could prove to be useful. If you are a “visual” person and need an app to help organize your daily life then GraphicTask may be just the app you need to try.

Okay, so what’s so cool about that?  Well, I don’t know.  I guess it’s just kind of nice to have one single tool to record anything and everything that you want to remember, when you think of it.  Adding notes into Evernote is really easy.  You just pick from one of the options: Text, Snapshot, Camera Roll, and Voice and do what it says to do.  For each of these options you can title your note, add tags so you can search and find them easily in the future, and you can add them to favorites if it’s uber important.  You certainly don’t need to be a rocket scientist to do that do you?  Of course not.

Another thing that’s pretty cool about this app is that it automatically records your location when you record a note.  So whether you take a picture, type a note, or voice record yourself a reminder, the location of where you did it is tagged to that note.  If you haven’t guessed by now, Evernote is more than just a reminder tool, it’s essentially an on the go digital filing cabinet.  The app itself is completely free and integrates rather seamlessly with the rest of the Evernote family of offerings.  As mentioned earlier, Evernote has web based and computer based versions of their software that you can use and sync effortlessly with your iPhone and vice versa.  For multitaskers that are on the go all the time and can’t afford to forget or leave anything behind, Evernote is a great tool to have.

Overall I found Evernote to be a handy little app.  It won’t win any awards for looks, but what it lacks visually it makes up technologically.  It works perfectly and there seems to be more and more apps coming out that integrate with it, making it even more convenient (ex. Scanner Pro).  As mentioned before, Evernote is completely free, but it comes with some restrictions.  You’re allotted a 40MB a month upload allowance, which is more than enough for me and probably enough for most, but if you find that you’re using this for a business and pumping documents, contracts, receipts, and reminders through at record pace then you can upgrade your account to a premium service that’ll give you 500MB monthly upload allowance as well as a bunch of other nifty features like searching within PDFs, priority image recognition, the ability to sync any type of file, and a bunch of other nice to haves.  You can upgrade at any time via in app purchase.  Whether you’re an organized person that can use a more convenient way to keep all of your things together, or a dissorganized person in need of some help, it’s worth checking out Evernote.  It’s free so you might as well give it a shot.

Password Caddy by Trotz Software is exactly what the name suggests – an application that helps protect and organize your passwords. The first thing to do is to create caddies, which are storages that hold information and are themselves password-protected. These can be accessed on the main menu, and once opened, will take you to a screen that lists categories which will hold various keys of your making. You can opt to change the category names, but the developers pretty much covered everything you’ll need: computer logins, website logins, financial, bills, online shopping, and software keys. What I loved the most was how the key information sheet could be changed based on certain templates – basic login will let you input a username and password, website login adds a website address entry, financial account allows you to type in a particular institution’s information apart from providing a notes section, and software key provides for company and software information slots. Each of these entries can be copied to the clipboard to make inputting passwords from your iPhone easy, and there’s also the option to launch site links in Safari. Finally, let’s not forget the handy password generator built into the app which will create a password for you based on your letter, number, special symbol, bracket, and length specifications. This is an infinitely useful feature, especially if you’re tired of thinking up creative new combinations to use.

To add to all these great functions, Password Caddy’s streamlined interface, subtle yet suitable sound effects, and controls that are smoothly adapted to the iPhone’s touch responsiveness lend the app a very professional feel and make for a great experience. There’s no doubt that it will secure a top spot on the AppStore for its functionality and polish, so if you’ve been looking for a password app, why not check out this excellent offer?

Overall we found Christmas Gifts List by Adamcode to be a  simple and great way to keeping track of your holiday shopping list and budget (Black Friday, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, etc.).  The interface is easy to use and is much more convenient than hand writing a list!  A couple features that we think may beef the app up even more would be if you could schedule reminders for each item on your list and could take a pictures directly from the app.  It’d also be cool if there were a list of different holiday themes that let you switch up the look based on your holiday preference.

So here we are, it’s almost Black Friday, and it’s time to start putting together your list.  Do yourself a favor and don’t do it the old fashioned way this year!  Save yourself time and money and do it with Christmas Gifts List app for iPhone and iPod Touch!

PC2ME Plus Audio is a nifty app created by 1stWorks Corp that enables you to control your Windows desktop applications (or a Windows partition on a Mac) directly from your iPhone. For starters, the installation process was a BREEZE. Simply download and install the remote control software on the computer.  Set up a native app identity user name and password. The software also enables you to connect through a web browser so you are provided with a personal URL link.

After everything is set up on the PC side, it’s time to download the app on your iPhone.  Upon launching the software, you are taken to the main menu screen which has afew options: DESK (provides access to the PC desktop), DESK+AUDIO (Provides access to the PC desktop and allows audio to be played through the iPhone), PLAY/STOP (a quick shortcut button that allows you to play and stop audio), a LOCK or EXIT button (Lock forgets the password), and a HELP page, (Help brings up the local quick help section.)

This powerful software offers a wide range of options for those that need to gain access to their personal computer while on the go. Control any windows desktop application at any screen size. Pan and zoom around the computer and explore all your files using the touch control panel. The touch control panel  has plenty of tools at your fingertips (a quick tap with two fingers launches the toolbar):  Cut & Paste, a full keyboard, hot keys, shortcuts to PC applications, and basic navigation control just to name a few of the tools provided. One of the great features about the app is that you can listen to full CD quality audio from your PC, directly to the iPhone using Wifi, 3G and Edge networks. The cool thing about it is you can launch iTunes, Win-amp, or any other media player to accomplish this, no matter what the file size or file type is, PC2ME Plus Audio is a great alternative source for getting additional music on the iPhone.

For the most part, PC2ME Plus Audio delivered on everything it said it would. Its ease of use, excellent sound quality, tools for desktop PC navigation and music access provide an app well worth the cost if you value remote access to your PC, or simply have to many songs on the iPod and need a second source. The graphical interface and toolbar buttons do leave some room for improvement. That coupled with some slight sluggish behavior using the remote mouse cursor, as well as trying to pan zoom around the desktop were the only real complaints we discovered with the app. Another item worth mentioning is that as of now, the application only works with a PC or a Windows partition on a Mac, but does not run on Mac OSX. Hopefully that too will be in the cards down the road.
