Enemy aircraft will attack from all sides, and the player must respond to the crew member’s warning and destroy the attacking aircraft before the attacking aircraft destroys the player’s bomber! Bandits – 2 o’clock! Climb into your ball turret and defend your B-17 until it can deliver its ordinance over the hated enemies war infrastructure … You have to be fast, accurate, and have sharp eyes to make it to the bomb run.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed in the 1930s for the then-United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps’ expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract because the prototype crashed, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing’s design that they ordered 13 more B-17s for further evaluation. From its introduction in 1938, the B-17 Flying Fortress evolved through numerous design advances.

The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based at Thorpe Abbotts airfield in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command’s nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord. The B-17 also participated to a lesser extent in the War in the Pacific where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields.

From its pre-war inception, the USAAC (later USAAF) touted the aircraft as a strategic weapon; it was a potent, high-flying, long-range bomber that was able to defend itself, and to return home despite extensive battle damage. It quickly took on mythic proportions, and widely circulated stories and photos of B-17s surviving battle damage increased its iconic status. With a service ceiling greater than any of its Allied contemporaries, the B-17 established itself as an effective weapons system, dropping more bombs than any other U.S. aircraft in World War II. Of the 1.5 million metric tons of bombs dropped on Germany by U.S. aircraft, 640,000 tons were dropped from B-17s.

Competition is fierce, and developers are finding it takes more than just a good idea to succeed. One success story is Sunstorm Interactive, the development shop of gaming world veteran Anthony Campiti whose portfolio of apps has generated more than 75 Million downloads since joining the App Store 3 years ago. Sunstorm has now expanded into offering premium ad space inventory giving advertisers quick access to the eyes and spending power of their gamers.

“People ask me quite often what the recipe is for our success”, says Campiti. “While there is no magic money making button to press in the app store, the trick is to find a niche you are good at and focus on it. We also believe that to be successful in the app store in the long run, you have to constantly be coming out with new high quality products and upgrades for your existing customers. Building a strong brand and a loyal customer base is just as important as building a strong app”.

Campiti cut his video game chops back in 1995 as the creator of the hit “Deer Hunter” arcade games, the first realistic 3D outdoor experience for the PC. After years of building PC games, he turned his eyes to the app world. “We went to apps because Apple has created an environment that cuts out the middle man. In the past, the only way to get in front of a consumer was through a large publisher, which meant sacrificing a level of control and profits. With apps, we are able to take our products directly to the consumer on a global basis. Frankly, its revolutionary!”

With 75 million downloads around the world, Sunstorm is delivering more than 250 million ad impressions every month. “Many of our apps are for kids, and we have found quite a bit of success in working with other developers of apps for children to promote their apps within ours using mobile banners” says Campiti. Sunstorm has been able to single handedly drive a number of apps into the top ranks of the app store. Sunstorm sells their ad space on a CPM and CPI basis.
