Flip It!

Flip It! is a cool app that allows to you to create flipbook style animations. You start off by creating a new book. This menu feature allows you to save individual book animations and also keeps your work organized. Once your new book is created, simply select from one of 41 colors, then pick a drawing tool and start creating! The toolset options include a pen, eraser, line, rectangle, filled rectangle, ellipse, and filled ellipse. As you start creating your animation, you will find the need to copy existing pages over to the new pages so you don’t have to re-create anything. This is accomplished by holding the + button down, and then selecting “copy page”. It’s a handy feature at allows you to achieve the end result much faster.

Another feature is the ability to view your animation with forward and reverse playback modes. You can also control the speed of the animation with a simple Slow/Fast adjustment bar. One other quality worth mentioning is the ability to select a photo from your picture library and use it as a background plate.

The interface of Flip It! is very easy to understand. You will be able to get a basic animation together in no time flat. As of 5/14/09, the price point of Flip It! is $2.99, which seems a little high. It’s a nifty app, but lacks a few key features that would set it over the top, like the ability to save your animation as a movie and export them out to share with friends. If you have Flip It! on your iPhone then you are likely to get rid of the other “drawing” type apps you may own because it simply has more features and makes the others obsolete.
