As a drummer, i have dabbled in a few various percussion apps on the market, though no percussion app has kept my interest quite like Dhol Player for iPhone! This is really a fun app and you don’t have to be a drummer to enjoy it. There are some unique features that make this app one of the better choices if you are looking to “finger drum”. I’m a “tapper”. I finger tap all the time; whether its on the steering wheel while driving, on the desk at work, or even on a beer bottle – i always have a beat to lay down. I like Dhol Player because it combines accurate finger trigger technology with the unique sound of the dhol drum. With three drum points to hit (treble side, base side, and the wooden part up top) you can come up with some creative combos.
If you are a fan of Bhangra or Bollywood music then you’ll love the sound of the dhol drum. The drum samples are crisp and accurate representations of the real thing. The menu layout is well designed – the developer used the four corners of the screen as menu buttons and put the dhol drum in the center. This button layout is in a convenient location and i never found it to interfere while playing.
For the pro’s or the beginners – Dhol Player will be sure to entertain. My favorite feature of Dhol Player is the ability to play along LIVE with Bikram Singh, a famous Indian artist. Select one of four vocal tracks, then tap along to create unique percussion beats to the songs. Another cool feature is the ability to play along with any song in your iPod. These two features alone add a ton of additonal value to Dhol Player over other percussion apps on the market. With additional features like a “Learn How” section and a “Get Fancy” section which allows you to trigger intrecate “roll” tracks of percussion loops, Dhol Player is a great choice if you are looking for an app in this category.
