Toronto, Canada – Female Mobile App Girl, Dee Jones, is quickly making waves in the app world, with total downloads approaching 3 million units. Dee parlayed a career in ad sales into a full time gig producing mobile apps. When you think of an iPhone developer, the typical stereotype would include reclusive men with B. Sc. degrees coding in industrial building back rooms.
Dee Jones is a bird of another feather.
Dee, whose background included managing a bar while going to school, and obtaining degrees in dress making and fashion design, has quickly risen to become a top mobile developer with millions of iPhone and iPad app downloads. In the last year her apps have been downloaded every 15 seconds in 90+ countries around the world.
Ms. Jones, a former star ad salesperson at Rogers Media, bought an iPhone 2 years ago, and within an hour of playing with the device her new course was radically reset … to become a mobile developer.
“I came into this business from a totally different angle, that’s for sure”, according to Dee, “My concern was not so much on the technical side, it was … How can i make fun apps that regular people would enjoy using?”.
Jones rolled up her sleeves, looking for a way to transform traditional content and engage the everyday consumer. Three months later, she released her first app, “Pocket Cocktails” a top selling graphic drink application. Within its first year the app was featured in Food & Wine magazine. Later, Grey Goose contacted her which led to a marketing partnership with the established liquor giant.
Dee takes pictures of new drinks herself, in the living room of her condo. “Producing creative content is the thing I really enjoy most”, Dee gleams. She once recorded the sound of a fire truck roaring downtown, sticking a studio microphone outside her window, including the shrill sound in her Dog Tricks app, Bark Machine. “We do have unconventional ways of sourcing new content”.
Within the first year, Dee’s firm had 6 apps in the wild including “SixPack App”, one of the most downloaded fitness apps on the iTunes store (over 2 million at last count), the app was featured in Men’s Journal magazine, and the nationally syndicated TV show, “The Doctors”.
Dee has focused her recent efforts on the emerging tablet market, revamping “Cocktails HD”, which is currently a top-selling iPad cocktails app on iTunes. “We really overhauled it, added a ton of content including over 100 wines, and new halloween and christmas drinks, we think it will be an awesome app for the holiday season.”
Dee’s success in app development has led her to crossover to other media, she is scheduled to be a co-host on an upcoming TV show, she plans on producing fun segments that will entertain and educate app users. “Its also a great opportunity to promote our wares”, Dee winks.
