Luna Kettlebottom is a new series of eBooks about a group of “monster” kids who are transported together, through a magic cauldron, into exciting and funny adventures. The app’s title page introduces the gang: Luna Kettlebottom, a young, organizationally-minded girl, who is the founder of the Magic Cauldron Society and the story’s narrator; Ghoulia, her self-obsessed, valley girl girlfriend; Vlad the adventurous young boy with vampirish good looks and a fear of heights; and Howl the big hungry and hairy werewolf. The fairy tale begins as they all gather in the secret room of the petrified tree, where they each toss offerings into the Magic Cauldron to unlock their mystical adventure.
After going through the Magic Cauldron Vortex they land in the village of Monster Meadow as characters in the tale. Luna plays the town’s mayor, and Howl makes a guest appearance as the Giant. “One awful day, the sky thundered, the earth shook and darkness gripped the entire village. When the sun came out again, all the town’s valuables, including all the gold from the bank, a gargoyle that lays golden eggs, and the Magnificent Monster Meadows Magical Musical Harp were gone!”
Over the course of the story, we discover that it was a Giant who lives in the clouds who was responsible for the theft. Fortunately for all, Vlad’s Magic Beanstalk provides a direct, if dangerous, route up to the Giant’s castle. Vlad makes several trips to retrieve the gold, the gargoyle, and the harp…and conquer his fear of heights. At every step of the way, there are puns, jokes, and adventure, fashioning a perfect, modern-day adaptation of the famous fairy tale.
What separates Luna Kettlebottom and the Magic Cauldron Society from the many offerings for children on the iTunes App Store is the extraordinary quality of every aspect of the book’s production. As stated, the app features graphics, animation, voiceovers, music, sound effects, and interactivity far superior to similar eBooks. Particularly noteworthy are the performances of the veteran voiceover artists who play the roles of the children. Both their personas and earnest dialogue lend the story a level of realism not often achieved in eBooks.
“We looked at the market for kids’ eBooks and found that almost all of their producers were simply slapping the hard cover book into the digital medium with very minor interactivity. So we developed Luna Kettlebottom such that the young reader actively participates in the story on every page,” commented Andrew Babb of Brandissimo!. “The text is on the bottom of the page and the reader interacts with the characters in the illustrations in order to progress through the adventure. By including relevant gameplay in our books we hope to help early readers experience the joy of reading.”
