On this day…

Post Rating

Here’s an app that’s inconspicuous by nature, and certainly won’t knock your socks off, but in my mind is the perfect compliment to your morning coffee each day.  On this day…, created by Sophia Teutschler, is a nice little reference app that provides you with a historical snapshot of important and memorable events, as well as notable births and deaths that have happened on that day.

On this day...

On this day… is laid out in a calendar style format.  It opens to the current day automatically, and if you navigate to a different day it’ll open up where ever you last left off.  Personally I read everything for the current day and then made a B-line straight to my birthday.  I’ve looked up these types of facts before but I always forget them soon after.  It’s definitely cool to find out and/or be reminded of all the neat factoids about your birthday.  I happen to share a birthday with Richard Nixon, Dave Mathews, Sergio Garcia, Chad Ocho Cinco, Sean Paul, and a slew of other famous athletes, singers, and interesting people.  Cool stuff.

On this day… is the type of app that some people may enjoy making part of their daily routine.   I can easily see myself opening it up on a Sunday morning, accompanied by a cup of fresh brewed Joe, and learning a little bit about the events that have occurred on the days that have recently passed.  For the most part you can see everything you want to see in just a couple minutes, and for things that peak your curiosity, the app links straight to the Wikipedia page for that event or individual so you can read all about it.

On this day...

On this day… is a simple app with a classic look, that adds a little bit of “interesting” to your daily routine.  It’s certainly not a bells and whistles app, and I have to admit it got hung up in “thinking” mode a few times while messing with it, but for what it is, it’s everything it needs to be and more.  I plan to keep it and refer to it from time-to-time; I think that many of you will do the same once you try it.  There are other similar apps out in the App Store, but it’s hard to beat this one because it’s free!

Just a couple of tidbits about today before I leave you.  It appears that today could be considered a day of royalty.  Four kings were born, one died, and three emperors died (one was assassinated).  There’s only one way to find out who they are.  Download the app!

Pros:

  • Easy enough for grandma to use
  • One touch access to interesting historical factoids
  • It’s free

Cons:

  • Seems to get hung up occasionally, but if you exit and reopen it works fine

Version Reviewed: 1.0.1

Requirements: iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad; iPhone OS 3.0 or later
