The game starts with how humans have progressed and made their presence in space by exploring new planets and other objects in the universe. Inter-space travel has resulted in space hijackers and kidnappers, and space police to control them. The game makes you the super confident and brave space cop, Kaptain Brawe. My mission was to rescue 2 alien scientists who had been kidnapped. It all sounded very serious but as I progressed the storyline became quite entertaining.

The game has been set in 4 unique planet surroundings. There are over 40 different locations in the gameplay with amazing graphics for each. So there I go jumping into the spacecraft.

I could play in 2 game modes. Hard Mode – I had to choose between the hand and the magnifying glass to interact with objects on screen. Casual Mode – The hand and magnifying glass were chosen for me and there were lots of hints provided. The question mark icon proved very useful as it showed all intractable objects on the screen. Even the exits are visible as arrows on clicking the question mark. The journal at the bottom left of the screen showed a list of tasks I must finish.

The look and feel of the game is similar to the point-and-click adventure games such as Telltale games. The initial download is free but once I finished the tutorial part, a payment of $4.99 has to be made to continue the play.

To sum it up, Kaptain Brawe – A Brawe New World is a challenging yet humorous gameplay about finding items, questioning characters and combining everything perfectly to solve puzzles. It has a brilliant soundtrack and I felt as if I was watching an old adventure flick. The amazing graphics combine hand-drawn backgrounds with 3D character models. The game scores in the retro look and feel but for new age kids who are used to playing modern adventures with full voice casts will get disappointed. The company needs to bring in more innovation for a longer app life.

Yet another app riding on the success of Doodle Jump’s bouncing game system, Freaky Jump injects some new concepts that hardly come across as creative but breathes fresh life into the genre.

To start off, Freaky Jump follows the same concept of bouncing off platforms and advancing to the top. However, the difference lies in the fact that Freaky Jump does not consist of one infinitely long level where your objective is to get a high score. Instead, you are required to reach a certain height before moving on to the next level. In short, stages and levels replace a free jump mode.

Add-ons such as propeller caps and rockets are also present in Freaky Jump. However, a magnet is also available to further boost high scores. Springs found in Doodle Jump and other similar games can also be found in Freaky Jump, giving a slight boost to gamers. Freaky Jump requires players to complete all the stages in one “world” before moving on to the next. While the concept of levels and stages in a traditionally open-mode genre is rather fresh, it soon becomes stale for levels are virtually identical to each other with the obvious reshuffling of tile placements being what sets them apart. With the completion of each level, stars are given based on the points accumulated, but they hardly do anything to bolster game progress.

Achievements are also available for fanatics, but that is hardly anything to fuss or rave about. It is insignificant as it does not contribute much to actual game play.

Pros:

Level system instead of infinite mode.
Slightly different from run of the mill jumping games.

Cons:

Levels are not very varied. Only background and slight platform changes.
Not much incentive to continue playing the game (e.g. unlockable content)

Following which, you can choose to save the boards of your choice for easy access in the future.

The simplicity of the app is lovable. There are no frills, and no fanciful features to distract you. Everything is presented in one neat page for your scrolling and reading pleasure. Forum signatures are not displayed, making load times much faster. How many times have you had a page take forever to load because one user chose to use a massive image for his signature? Forum posts just include the avatar and content, nothing more. There is even a toggle for users to choose if they want the avatars to be shown or not!

Organization wise, ProBoards groups everything neatly in categories and folders. Each section of a forum board is neatly categorized through folders, which in turn have tabs to separate the sticky threads from the normal ones, and a separate tab containing the announcement. All this adds to the wonderful user experience, making it easy to access sites that do not have mobile skin support.

At $2.99, this is one app that is really handy to have. While the steep price might not be justifiable for some, users who frequently access online message boards will love the convenience it brings as well as not having to deal with ridiculous skin templates that sometimes prove to be an eyesore.

Pros:

Neat and well organized.

No huge images to slow down your surfing experience.

Cons:

Price is a little too high.

It’s that time of year again! Halloween is nearly among us so of course it’s time to start making ghoulish photos and posting them to Facebook, assigning them to contacts, and emailing them to friends and family. Monstermakr created by Dadako Studios is the newest edition to the face altering genre and does a good job of making the process easy, spirited, and kid friendly.

The kid friendly aspect of this app is what stands out the most to me. It’s really easy to customize your face and email, share, and post to Facebook and Twitter. I can see middle school aged kids having a field day making funny pics of their friends, teachers, bus drivers, and parents. Adults can get a kick out of this app too, especially in a workplace setting, but for me it loses it’s luster pretty quickly. Maybe that’s just because I’ve messed around with so many different face apps at this point

So there’s really not much to explain about Monstermakr. If you’ve tried one face altering app you have the general gist of what’s involved. The most important things to know is does it do a good job and is it easy to use, and for this app that’s definitely the case. It takes literally one minute to snap a pic, drag and drop in some funny fake eyes, lips, mustaches, wounds, etc. It takes just a touch or two to add sounds, share with friends, post to Facebook. I think anyone fairly acquainted with an iPhone or iPod touch will create masterpieces with little to know direction. Even 3-5 year olds could whip up a little somethin somethin with this app.

I think we can all agree that apps like this are seasonal and pretty cheesy, which is exactly why many of us like them. Kids love getting into the spirit of Halloween and having a funny face maker is definitely something they’ll enjoy. If you’re looking for one that both you and your kids can have fun with then Monstermakr certainly fits the bill. It’s only $0.99 and probably good for a couple of laughs.

Pros:

Kid friendly, mom’s can have fun with it too
Easy to use and has a decent selection goodies to choose from

Ponk

Gooey maneuverable balls, 3 game modes, and match 3+ puzzle game-play awaits in the well put together and moderately addictive Ponk. Using your finger you drag and place colored balls as they fall from the sky. The object is to stack like colored balls so they touch. When three or more balls of the same color touch they explode, often times setting of chain reactions. Each of the three game modes require a different strategy, but one thing remains constant throughout, you must match quickly and strategically if you want to survive long enough to score big.

Created by Five AM Studio, Ponk is another twist added to the popular match 3+ puzzle gaming category. The game provides you with complete control of your destiny no matter which game mode you choose; Klassik, Kaboum, or Time Attack. Klassik mode is a lot like Tetris without the variety of shapes. The object is to prevent the balls from stacking to the top of the screen so as you can guess the more balls you can eliminate, the more levels you pass and the more points you earn. Kaboum mode is the one I probably like the most. It seems to require more strategy than the other modes. Kaboum mode is all about blowing stuff up (Uh…huh, huh…cool – Butthead). In this level you’ve got do all the same stuff as Klassik mode but in order to advance to the next level you’ve got to blow up all the padlock looking balls and mystery balls. To do so you’ve got to guide and position matching colored balls so they adequately surround the padlock and star filled balls. Sprinkled into the mix are some bombs, which you’ll want to use to enhance the power and depth of your explosion. Lastly there’s Time Attack, of which the title tells you everything. You’re working against an unforgiving clock and must dissolve like colored balls ASAP or you’re game will end really quickly.

There are some pretty cool features within the game. One of my favorites is the “more balls” option. Essentially it’s a button you can press at anytime to launch a sudden blast of balls. I get bored pretty quick so having more to do at once seems to keep me entertained. Another helpful feature is the “freeze” button. You’ve got to earn the power to freeze, but once all the green lights are full you can press it to stop all falling balls in their tracks. The freeze lasts quite a while so you have plenty of time to maneuver everything around to your advantage. Altogether there are 42 different achievements you can unlock as you play. Many of which enhance the gaming experience and help you blow up more balls with less effort.

Overall Ponk is a nicely put together match 3+ puzzler with decent replayability and a smooth interface. I didn’t find it to be as addictive as some of the other puzzlers I’ve played, but it definitely is a quality game worth trying out. The touchiness and responsiveness of the game are great, which should keep both youngins and older peeps pretty engaged. If you’ve been looking to replace one of your oldy but goody puzzlers it’s worth checking out Ponk.

Cons:

Aims to be unique, but isn’t too far removed from many other match 3+ puzzlers

Flight Doodle

Tacks, winds, airplanes, and more threaten your advance. Mastery of tilt and speed are required for dominance.

Created by Eyedip LLC, the makers of the popular Pocket Devil game, Flight Doodle is just another addition to the immensely crowded assortment of doodle themed games available in the iTunes App Store. The object of the game is to fly your balloon (or whatever else you’re flying) further than anybody else. As you’d expect there are a variety of things to prevent you from doing so, namely storm clouds, prevailing winds, falling tacks, airplanes, and floating chunks of land. Avoiding these is a full-time job. Thankfully there are several bonusses you can earn and collect along the way. If you see stars make sure to grab them because they give you a nice skip ahead. In addition you can earn the ability to shrink yourself so it’s easier to avoid stuff, turn on a shield so nothing can hurt you, and can fire bullets to free up some space. Bullets are kind of a double edged sword though because if you miss your target not only do you have to avoid hitting your target but the bullet loses momentum and starts falling back toward you.

There’s a nice selection flying apparatuses to choose from in the game. There’s multiple balloons, light bulbs, snow globes, and more. Each of which you can further customize by adding your own color and designs, which is a nice added touch. To navigate your balloon (or whatever you’ve chosen) you simply tilt your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad from side-to-side. There are a handful of speed related controls at your disposal to help you advance faster and avoid obstacles more efficiently. There are buttons for speeding up and slowing down at will, and a button that abruptly boosts you up to the top of the screen. I found the speed up button to be pretty handy, and if you time it just right the boost button may be able to get you out of a jam. The boost button shoots you straight to the top of the screen, so if you find yourself in a situation where you need to get out of dodge quick you should probably press it.

Overall I was impressed with the quality of the game. I felt like pretty much every aspect of it was extremely well done. The imagery, menus, game-play, and replayability are all excellent for a doodle themed game. The most critical part of the game to master is the tilt controls. Finding the sensitivity setting that bets suits you is key. It can be tricky at times because objects come at you pretty quickly and leave minimal room for error, but because you’re flying there’s a little of over-steer with every movement. The best way I found to combat the over-steer is to keep the pedal to the medal by holding down the Speed Up button. There’s pluses and minuses to doing this, but for me it seems to work well. Typically Flight Doodle is $0.99 which is definitely a decent price for what you get. I have to mention though that the app is currently free, which was originally supposed to just be a one day promotion, but it appears to have stuck around for a few days so if you don’t already have it I recommend snagging it while it’s on the house!

Pros:

Good graphics, well designed and developed
Nice assortment of options and customizability
Pretty addictive, decent replayability

Cons:

Little bit of over-steer makes it a bit tricky at times, but it’s a flying game so I think that’s to be expected

Tetrapped

If you’re looking to flex your brain muscles then Tetrapped is a game you should check out. In this game you’ve got 6 x 6, 7 x 7, and 8 x 8 board puzzles filled with tetromino pieces. Your mission, strategically slide the pieces around until you’ve fit the proper piece in shadowed area. These simple looking puzzles pack a mean punch and require the utmost concentration and a steel curtain of patience.

Created by Yorksoft, Tetrapped has a rather simple looking graphics. It’s doodle-esque theme gives the impression that the puzzles are a bit elementary. I’m a fan of strategy puzzles such as these so I cracked my knuckles and had at it. It took me a while to get in the groove, but it wasn’t long before I was ripping my way through the 6 x 6 puzzles. For beginners these puzzles can be a bit challenging, but experienced players will likely blow right through most of the 100 6 x 6 puzzles in 45 minutes to an hour.

Obviously the difficulty increases as the size of the puzzles increase. 7 x7′s aren’t too bad, 8 x 8′s are a bit trickier. Altogether there are 300 puzzles to solve, 100 for each grid size. I’ve gotten through a bunch of the puzzles so far, but still have over 100 left to solve. Tetrapped easily provides ultra experienced puzzle solvers with 3-4 hours worth of continuous and fairly intense puzzle solving goodness. Less experienced puzzle solvers could easily get 40 or more hours worth of brain teasing enjoyment out of this app. Given it’s $0.99 price point that’s good value.

Overall I enjoyed Tetrapped. I’m always game for a good puzzle solver. I don’t feel like Tetrapped is all that unique of a puzzler. I’ve played many that feel very similar, have better options and effects, and more puzzles. However, those other games typically are a bit more expensive, falling somewhere in the $1.99 and up realm. For what you get I feel like Tetrapped offers a nice amount of game-play, respectable graphics and sounds, and will without a doubt keep many of you busy and frustrated for many hours at a time.

Pros:

Game-play is challenging for intermediate and novice puzzle solvers
Offers 300 levels in 6 x6, 7 x 7, and 8 x 8 grids
Good replayability, offers many hours of game-play

Cons:

Game is not unique, there are many other similar puzzle games

Croak!

The life of a tree frog seems like utter bliss. All you’ve gotta do is climb trees, spit out some ribbits here and there, and snag unsuspecting insects to fatten your belly right? Wrong! When you play Croak! the life of a tree frog seems like utter chaos. Try bobbing and weaving around striking venomous snakes, sticky tongued frog leg loving chameleons, and nimble lemurs as you fire your tongue at tasty winged tidbits. It’s no simple task and certainly not The Life of Riley.

Created by Rather Odd Computing, Croak! reminds me a lot of Sticky Licky, except with a number of twists that make it a bit more interesting and difficult. Typically in games like this you just fire off a sticky tongue and real in insect after insect, while trying to avoid things like bees and other prickly buggers. Well, in Croak! you’ve got to catch food, but you need to avoid random frog eating predators that appear docile and then strike when you least expect it. To avoid getting eaten you must preemptively tilt your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad to hop your frog out of the way. The further you get in the game the more sly and unpredictable the frog eaters become.

If you’re a fan of 2D arcade games then you’re going to enjoy Croak! The challenge within the game leans less toward the difficulty of capturing the insects and more toward remaining aware of the imminent strike from a predator and you’re ability to swiftly avoid their attack while remaining efficient at capturing your dinner. The quicker you can master the multi-tasking nature of the game the further you’ll advance. As you become better you’ll unlock more and more themes, tree frog species, dinner options, and blood thirsty predators.

After a few goes with Croak! it was clear to me that I’ve got to put in a little more practice before I can sit atop the Open Feint global leaderboard. The game comes across as being really easy until you’ve waded a few levels deep, after that it begins to bear teeth. I zoomed through the first eight levels in a matter of minutes, but soon after hit a bit of a snag. My three lives dissapeard in the blink of an eye as it seemed the snake had figured out my every move. I elected to adopt a float like a butterfly method, keeping my frog constantly on the move. This worked for a few more levels, but after a while it mattered not. The snake operates under a cloak of unpredictability and strikes swiftly. Once you’ve reached a certain point in the game luck is out the door and you’ve really got to stay focused on both dinner and the snake, timing your every move perfectly in order to earn points and stay alive at the same time.

Overall Croak! is a very fun arcade style game. The first half a dozen or so levels feel a bit mundane, but after that you’ve really gotta step up your game. It’s fast paced and great for picking up and killing short windows of time. The graphics and sounds are decent and the game becomes quite addictive once you’ve unlocked a few frogs, predators, and themes. It’s definitely a great value for the $0.99 price point and well worth the download.

Pros:

Lots of levels, insects, predators, and frogs
Addictive, fast paced, and good replayability
Good value for the price

Cons:

Starts out a bit easy, need to get 8 or more levels deep for it to get interesting
Feels a bit repetitive over time, playing in small bursts is key

Grumps

What does it say of me if I saw the name of this app and was immediately drawn to it? HAHA, long week I guess If you like dodge ‘em games then you may want to try your luck at Grumps. Trapped in a 2D world you’re forced to weave in and out of falling emoticons in an endless and increasingly difficult journey to stay alive. If you’ve got good vision and excellent tilt reflexes, you may score big in this game.

Created by Mojo Software, Grumps is a very simple concept, that’s basic to the eye yet difficult to master. Disgruntled emoticons rain down endlessly from above with increasingly smaller windows of space separating them. It’s your job to tilt your iPhone/iPod/iPad side-to-side to navigate the avatar, which happens to bear a striking resemblance to developer Carl Andrews, in and out of the way of the falling frowny faces. You’ve got a little wiggle room for error because you can get touched up to 3 times before you’re toast. However, if you put yourself in the wrong position, getting hit three times in a row is really easy to do.

Much to their dismay, the Grumps aren’t the only emoticons on the block. There are also happy faces and bombs. Collecting happy faces gives you bonus points so you can pad your score a bit as you play. Keep in mind Grumps includes Open Feint so padding your score equates to bragging rights on the global leaderboard. Bombs are the most critical things to gather in my mind. Once you’ve grabbed a bomb, you can save it for when you need it most. When you’re cornered and it’s a certainty that the Grumps are about to give you the smackdown just tap the screen to unleash the bombs fury, obliterating all the Grumps on the screen. Collecting bombs and smiley faces are a must, but keep in mind that many times they’re set up as a trap and it’s almost a given that you’ll get hit by a Grump or two trying to snag one. No biggie if you’ve got three lives left, but once you’re down to your last one, you’ll really want to pick and choose when to go for them.

So, what’d I think about Grumps? Meh, it’s okay. I played it, didn’t really love it, not really sure if I’ll play it again. I found the tilting sensitivity to be a little on the slow side, and overall I guess I just wish it was a bit more polished. The sound effects seem a bit cheesy to me and the graphics although they may be appealing to many, are a bit rough around the edges and kind of remind me of scenery from Pee Wee’s Playhouse. At a cost of only $0.99 it’s hard to say that this game’s not worth the money because it does offer those that enjoy retro looking dodge ‘em games something to add to their collection. However, I’m not really sure that Grumps is going to be everybody’s cup of tea.

Pros:

Challenging, will give dodge ‘em game lovers a run for their money
Keeps you engaged as you play

Cons:

Tilt responsiveness seems a bit slow and unresponsive
Will be fun for some, not fun for others
