What do you get when you combine a cheating husband, losing your hard earned business in a contested divorce, 35 levels of challenging gameplay, great graphics, and flawless sound effects and animation? Hotel Mogul! In this game you’re Linette, a hard working business woman who recently learned that her husband of only 3 months has decided to take advantage of an overlooked loophole in their pre-nup and divorce her. Tell you what, we really liked Hotel Mogul, and let me tell you why. No part of this game disappoints. It’s easy to tell that Alawar Entertainment develops quality apps. All aspects of the game had the right sounds, animation, and effects. The interface is very intuitive. It’s easy to understand, easy to figure out where to go and what to do, and the game is a deep and challenging. The further you advance in the game the more strategy comes into play. You can successfully complete levels but still not have earned enough points to purchase structures required to play the next level. So it’s important you really run an efficient business, buying, demolishing, developing, upgrading, and selling the right properties and attractions at the proper points in time.

PeopleFlasher brings an all new twist to social networking apps that may just help you meet your next girlfriend or hail your next cab. People Flasher essentially turns your iPhone into a flashing sign so you can communicate your thoughts or needs with others quietly and clearly from across the room, across the street, or across the globe. You can customize the font, color, flash and scroll speed of your messages, and can select from one of forty different languages to display them in. You can choose to write your own custom messages, or in the sake of time can just choose one from the wide list of preset messages.

People Flasher, created by VisiComm, doesn’t fit the mold of what most would consider to be a Social Networking app. It’s not an all new app designed to compete with Facebook, Twitter, FriendFeed, or anything like that. This app is focused solely on making in person communication easier and more effective. The areas where this app is helpful is when you’re trying to get someone elses attention. So like restaurants, clubs, parties, events, bus stops, hailing a taxi, emergency situations, traveling in foreign countries, things like that. Instead of yelling, flailing your arms wildly, and jumping up and down, you can now create a flashing sign on your iPhone to get someones attention. So if you find yourself in Turkey needing to flag down a mini bus, or in a local bar wanting to get the attention of a pretty girl across from you, PeopleFlasher helps you get their attention easily and clearly.

In addition to the standard message creating and display options of PeopleFlasher, it also includes World Flash. World Flash displays the messages that other users are flashing from all over the globe. It’s very similar to the global listening feature that made Ocarina so popular. If you like the idea of checking out other peoples flashes then you’ll probably like this feature a lot. I found the feature to be okay, but for the most part, since the messages that people display in PeopleFlasher are really short, I didn’t find it all that amusing.

Overall we found PeopleFinder to actually work. At first glance we thought there was no way this app would ever be useful, however after taking it to the streets we were proven wrong. The flashing screen is very noticeable, and the messages it displays are surprisingly legible, even from relatively long distances. For the app to be most effective we recommend only using it at night or in dimmly lit places. The areas where we think the app could be improved would be for the look of the interface to be upgraded. Even though the end result is a colorful flashing image, the interface itself is rather plain. Aside from minor tweaks here and there, PeopleFlasher does exactly what it says it does. If you live in an urban area, are a frequent traveler to countries where you don’t know the language, or are a young high school or college aged individual, you may really like this app. At a minimum you’ll be able to hail cabs faster and will probably generate quite a few laughs and conversations when you bust the app out.

Nowadays we take tons and tons of pics on our iPhones but haven’t had a way to conveniently categorize, label and tag our pics without first uploading them to Facebook, a photo sharing website, or using external software on our computers. PhotoTag photography app for iPhone lets you categorize, name, label and tag any photos directly on your iPhone. It makes finding all of your photos a cinch! With just a few touches you can select a photo, insert and label tags, name your photo, save and email it!

We all know the scenario, you’ve got a photo that you want to share with a friend, you talk it up like it’s the most amazing picture ever, then you spend the next 5 minutes scrolling through hundreds of images trying to find it. I don’t know about you, but I’ve definitely had a few times where I talked up a pic, tried to show it to somebody, and after spending a few seemingly endless minutes trying to find it, my audience lost interest and pretty much told me, “It’s okay…show it to me later”. Yeah, I take a lot of pics, but I’m guessing many other iPhone owners are just like me. If so, you could probably use a much easier way to find your favorite pics.

PhotoTag is definitely a handy app that makes finding and sharing your favorite photos much easier. Don’t expect a lot of glitz and glam with this app, it’s very plain looking. There’s no crazy colors, flashy buttons, or wild sound effects. When the app first opens the screen is dark and blank. Press the Add Image button to get started. Once you’ve selected a pic just press the Create Tag button to start labelling your pic. You can add as many tags as you want and can easily show or hide any of them. Using the Add Names button you can quickly insert tags for previously tagged people. Just press the button, select a name from the list and BAM! Once saved, you can edit, share, and delete a photo at any time. From the View page you can conveniently delete photos, hide/show tags, and email them to all of your friends.

Overall, PhotoTag does a pretty decent job categorizing, labelling and tagging, and sharing photos. Ideally we think there could be a few updates that would make the app even more convenient and fun to use. For starters, we’d like to see the same colorful and fun looking theme used on the app load page incorporated throughout the entire app. The current interface is a bit dark and simplistic. Additional usability functionality would be a welcome addition. Currently you can only add a one photo at a time. It’d be nice to be able to select and import multiple photos at once so you don’t have to keep going back to the iPhone and scroll through all of the photos each time in order to select and import a single photo. Along those same lines we’d like the ability to be able to share and delete more than one photo at a time. Currently you have to view a single photo to email it or delete it. It’d be much nicer if you could delete entire categories from the View page with a single swipe and email multiple photos at once, perhaps even entire categories.

To sum it up, PhotoTag definitely makes finding your favorite photos on your iPhone much easier. You can quickly tag photos so that when you share them with friends and family you can highlight certain parts of the picture with ease. If you’ve got gobs and gobs of photos on your iPhone then you may just want to check this app out. It’s pretty easy to use, and could save you from boring your friends and family as they watch you thumb through tons of images on your iPhone next time you’re dying to show them a new pic.

Pub Pong

No, this isn’t just another beer pong game, Pub Pong is like air hockey for alcoholics! In this game you’re constantly bombarded with glasses full of beer, liquor, and cocktails from all angles. It’s your job to prevent drinks from passing by your side of the bar. To stop drinks you’ve got to grab one and chuck it back. Drinks bounce, ricochet, and collide to create ever evolving and challenging game-play. Each time an alcoholic beverage slips through your grasp you’ve got to chug, chug, chug it. Drink by drink your buzz increases, glasses start to blur, your reaction time slows, and your hand-eye coordination worsens. Let too many drinks pass by and BWAAAHHHH! You blow chunks everywhere and it’s game over!

Pub Pong, created by Xogos, leverages the iPhone’s accelerometer to grab and throw beverages. To grab drinks you simply maneuver your iPhone or iPod from side-to-side to move your in-game hand toward glasses. Once you’ve grabbed hold of a glass simply flick your wrist in a throwing motion to send the glass sliding across the bar. There are both single player and multiplayer game modes. In single player mode the objective is to earn as high a score as possible while in multiplayer mode you face off with another iPhone or iPod Touch wielding opponent in a head-to-head dual over a Bluetooth connection.

In single player mode you’re essentially playing drunken table tennis against an invisible opponent. A variety of drinks appear from above, bouncing and sliding in your direction. You’ve got to grab them one at a time and send them skidding back to the other side of the bar. Once they reach the other end drinks simply bounce off an invisible barrier and head back toward you. The longer you stay alive and the more glasses you ricochet and destroy, the more points you earn. In multiplayer mode the game-play is the same except you’re facing off against a friend or foe leveraging an iPhone or iPod Touch’s built in Bluetooth connectivity. It’s a one-on-one dual to the finish. The first one to get sick is the loser!

The most important thing to focus on while playing Pub Pong is your Tipsometer. It functions like an energy bar, except it measures how much you’ve had to drink. Your start the game as Sober, then go to Tipsy, Merry, Drunk, Bladdered, and then finally to Sick. You Tipsometer increases each time drinks pass through your grasp. You can lower your Tipsometer by earning big points and eating pub food. To earn points and pub food you’ve got to catch drinks, ricochet them off one another, and smash into pieces by making them collide.

Overall we found Pub Pong to be a fairly unique game. It’s crude and often repulsive sound effects make you feel like you’re side by side with a couple of dingy regulars at a worn and battered pub. The graphics are fairly basic, but that actually seems to fit the game well. We didn’t experience any bugs or weird quirks throughout our review process. If there was anything that we think could improve the game it’d be to increase the sensitivity of the game controls. We found the in-game hand to maneuver slower than we would’ve liked. Even when we positioned the iPhone at sharp angles the haste at which the hand moved from one side to another seemed to slow. We also think the throwing motion could be more sensitive. When we whipped our wrist to throw a glass the release seemed delayed, and in many cases the glass never left our hand. We definitely appreciated the way the game-play shifts as you character gets more intoxicated. It’s as appealing to the eye as it is frustrating to play!

One thing’s for sure, Pub Pong’s drinking theme, and semi-crude humor is right in line with what most college kids can relate too. It’s not a stretch to think it’s multiplayer mode could be used as a friendly pre-party drinking game. If you’re into drinking themed and drinking game type apps for iPhone and iPod Touch, you might just get a kick out of Pub Pong.

Full Screen Browser

If you have a hard time viewing web pages on your iPhone or iPod Touch because the screen is too small then you might want to check out the Full Screen Browser app. Full Screen Browser, created by Oliver Drobnik, increases your iPhone’s web display over Safari by 20% in portrait mode and 40% in landscape mode. How does it do it? Well, it conveniently hides the standard Safari menus found at the top and bottom of the browser window. The standard URL, search, bookmark, and navigation menus still exist, they’re just tucked out of view. You can invoke them at any time with a simple tap on the bottom right-hand corner of the touchscreen.

Aside from its significantly larger display, using Full Screen Browser is no different than Safari or any other iPhone app browser. As you’d expect you can set it to open to your favorite homepage, Google search, email links, save bookmarks, etc. It also includes a few unique options like switching pages to display the mobile version, a “What Time Is It?” pop up that tells you the current time, a translate page button that converts the current page language to a language of your choice (you can choose between English, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, French, and Nederlands), and an Open in Safari button launches the web-page you’re currently viewing in a new Safari window.

Overall, I found Full Screen Browser’s larger display to be helpful, unfortunately the other aspects and features of the app left little to be desired. In my opinion, Full Screen browser falls short of Safari in multiple critical areas such as speed, stability, presentment, and features. Excluding mobile formatted pages, I found Full Screen Browser to be much slower than Safari. A few times it got hung up while rendering a page, and on more than one occasion the app crashed and closed out. Regarding presentment, the display appeared to be slightly off and noticeably less crisp than Safari (ex. the Google search box has a crooked line at the top). I also had a couple instances where the translate feature didn’t work properly. One instance it looked like an in-app error, the second instance appeared to be a Google Translate error. Combine those things with the inability to open multiple web page sessions, and the inability to save more than 5 bookmarks and you’ve got some pretty compelling reasons as to why you may not elect to use Full Screen Browser as your primary iPhone browser.

All that being said, the fact remains that Full Screen Browser does provide you with a significantly larger viewing area (up to 40% more in landscape mode), meaning that if you’re rocking the coke bottle glasses, an old school monocle, or just have a hard time reading the tiny font on your iPhone or iPod Touch using Safari, you’ll probably see great value in having the larger display.

Bar Defender

Get your beer and liquor bottles ready because it’s about to go down! Bar Defender, a Simpson’s esque twist to traditional castle defense style games, pins you up against an evil multinational corporation who wants to level your favorite bar as part of their latest construction project. Determined to demolish it right away, they send in wave after wave of angry construction workers, police, riot squads and more to smash down the door and force you out. Like any loyal binge drinking alcoholic you’re not going to let someone take your favorite bar away without a fight. To succeed you’ve got to smash your enemies with a barrage of bottles until they wave the white flag and give up.

Bar Defender, by Extropia Games, replaces the traditional medieval based theme of most castle defense style games with a zainy compilation of sounds, graphics, and Simpson’s like cartoon characters. As you’d expect from any castle defense style game, to hit your enemies in Bar Defender you need to hurl beverages at appropriate launch angles and with adequate velocity. To do so you need to touch the screen and drag your finger up/down to increase/decrease the launch angle, and from left-to-right to increase/decrease the velocity. When ready just lift your finger and watch the bottles fly!

As you advance in the game your enemies become more difficult to stop. They come at you in greater density, at a faster pace, and are harder to damage. Waiting at the end of each level there is a boss that’s determined to stop you in your tracks. In total, there are 5 bosses to conquer. Each one driving their own unique bar demolishing vehicle. They drive anything from a standard police cruiser with a giant donut stuffed in the trunk to a fully armed military tank (APC).

In order to meet the game’s increasingly difficult challenges you’ve got to boost your morale and stock up on the best liquid weaponry. There are 5 different intoxicatingly thirst quenching beverages you can hurl at your enemies in this game. Each one causes a different level of damage and produces it’s own unique special effects. Boosting your morale allows you to take on more damage, essentially buying you more time to fend off your enemies. Each time you complete a level you earn money. To boost your morale and to acquire more effective weapons you’ve got to buy them with the money you earn. This is where the strategy of Bar Defender kicks in. If you don’t purchase the right combination of morale and weaponry, you will most certainly not succeed.

Overall we enjoyed the cartoon-like twist that Bar Defender provided. We found the game-play to be pretty fun, straight forward, and smooth. The throwing motion works well, the bottles fly realistically through the air, and the sound effects and characters match the overall theme of the game perfectly. The first two levels of the game we found to be very easy, and didn’t really require any strategy to conquer. However, once we got to level 3 the game got more difficult. It’s clear that as you advance in the game it’s increasingly important for players to spend their money on upgraded weapons and morale boost wisely if they expect to advance. If you’re a fan of castle defense style games and are open to trying one with a new twist, we recommend you check out Bar Defender.

Overall we found sdkIQ to be a great development resource for both the aspiring iPhone app developer and grizzled veterans. We took the liberty of letting a developer colleague of ours take the app for a test spin. They found it to be very credible, easy to follow, and full of useful information. To get a sneak peek for yourself you can always download sdkIQ Lite for free before purchasing the full shabang.

While using the app I noticed that some of the video app links didn’t appear to work. After a little bit of research I learned that some of the videos need to be downloaded into the app in order for the links to play them. So, if you come across the same thing, don’t panic! Downloading the videos is really easy, all you have to do is go to the Video Demonstrations section and touch the videos to start downloading. Each one takes a couple minutes. I myself don’t mind that because it makes the initial download of the app much smaller and faster to download.
