Apparently Pinterest is every woman’s dream!

Before we even delve into the review of this app you should know we made it a point to have one of our male associates review it. The thinking being the longer we could keep the women staffers in the dark the better as this platform seems to be so engrossing to the female persuasion all else stops. This would be very detrimental to us as the women in our lives run everything in the first place so we can’t imagine what would happen if they knew Pinterest was in the house. Now the cats out of the bag.

Pinterest wisdom well spoken

With that said the app delivers just like the platform. It rolls everything up in a nice tight bundle and smells better than the scented potpourri in the halls. This is not just another platform hoping to jump on the social media bandwagon, Pinterest has hit the ground running and is currently the fastest growing social media in history. It appears to be a combination of both Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr. In a sense that users are able to view pictures in a scrapbook format neatly categorized according to their preferred niche areas.

Some pins to admire

Essentially, this means users can pin up their interests for other users to view. Thus the name of the app, Pinterest.

To join Pinterest, users have to obtain an invite from an existing member. Unfortunately at the time of this review, an invite was not granted and so this review will focus on the aspects that are available for all to see.

Great for showing off the gowns

Think of Pinterest as a message board similar to the many different niche forums scattered across the internet. Replace the threads within with posts similar to that of Instagram, and sort them in a format similar to Tumblr’s scrapbook design. After that, add in Twitter’s timeline method of presentation and you have Pinterest.

Pinterest Home sweet home

Despite being a social network, there really is not much social interaction on this app. Pinterest serves more as a marketing tool, drawing viewers and audiences to products whether intended or not. As a relatively young site compared to the heavyweights in the industry, the success and appeal of Pinterest remains to be seen. In the meantime, why not give it a go and see how you like it for yourself?

Freaky Jump App Review ricochets off the doodle jump bounce game

Freaky Jump

Yet another app riding on the success of Doodle Jump’s bouncing game system, Freaky Jump injects some new concepts that hardly come across as creative but breathes fresh life into the genre.

To start off, Freaky Jump follows the same concept of bouncing off platforms and advancing to the top. However, the difference lies in the fact that Freaky Jump does not consist of one infinitely long level where your objective is to get a high score. Instead, you are required to reach a certain height before moving on to the next level. In short, stages and levels replace a free jump mode.

Add-ons such as propeller caps and rockets are also present in Freaky Jump. However, a magnet is also available to further boost high scores. Springs found in Doodle Jump and other similar games can also be found in Freaky Jump, giving a slight boost to gamers. However, unlike in Doodle Jump, players are unable to shoot projectiles in Freaky Jump.

Freaky Jump requires players to complete all the stages in one “world” before moving on to the next. While the concept of levels and stages in a traditionally open-mode genre is rather fresh, it soon becomes stale for levels are virtually identical to each other with the obvious reshuffling of tile placements being what sets them apart. With the completion of each level, stars are given based on the points accumulated, but they hardly do anything to bolster game progress.

Achievements are also available for fanatics, but that is hardly anything to fuss or rave about. It is insignificant as it does not contribute much to actual game play.

Pros:

Level system instead of infinite mode.
Slightly different from run of the mill jumping games.

Cons:

Levels are not very varied. Only background and slight platform changes.
Not much incentive to continue playing the game (e.g. unlockable content)

A seemingly endless amount of message boards are available for participating in through ProBoards. Essentially a mobile site for these forums, it allows you to partake in forum discussions anywhere and anytime as long as you have a working network connection. ProBoards presents you with a selection numbering in the thousands, from which you can choose from many categories to suit your personal interests. Following which, you can choose to save the boards of your choice for easy access in the future.

The simplicity of the app is lovable. There are no frills, and no fanciful features to distract you. Everything is presented in one neat page for your scrolling and reading pleasure. Forum signatures are not displayed, making load times much faster. How many times have you had a page take forever to load because one user chose to use a massive image for his signature? Forum posts just include the avatar and content, nothing more. There is even a toggle for users to choose if they want the avatars to be shown or not!

Organization wise, ProBoards groups everything neatly in categories and folders. Each section of a forum board is neatly categorized through folders, which in turn have tabs to separate the sticky threads from the normal ones, and a separate tab containing the announcement. All this adds to the wonderful user experience, making it easy to access sites that do not have mobile skin support.

At $2.99, this is one app that is really handy to have. While the steep price might not be justifiable for some, users who frequently access online message boards will love the convenience it brings as well as not having to deal with ridiculous skin templates that sometimes prove to be an eyesore.

Pros:

Neat and well organized.

No huge images to slow down your surfing experience.

Cons:

Price is a little too high.

Wallpaper apps have been a dime-a-dozen on the iPad since there release. They have been there on the iPhone as well, but unless your iPhone or iPod Touch is jail-broken, then you only could use images from them on your Lock screen. With iOS 4 that changed and it was a welcome change. I love beautiful wallpapers and change mine often. I use pictures I’ve taken or find them on the web. But the wallpaper apps in the app store have usually been pretty worthless. They either have pretty ordinary wallpapers or the interface is so horrible it makes getting the wallpaper out of the app a chore and just not worth it. But not any more.

I didn’t expect much from MyWalls, from Simpa Studio. But the app far exceeded my expectations. When it comes to a wallpaper app, the interface is a secondary concern. What you want is one that just doesn’t get in the way. If you notice it, it probably failed. It should be just simple and make it really easy to get your wallpapers from the app to the Lock screen or the Home screen. With MyWalls it succeeds. After finding a wallpaper you like, you tap the picture to reveal the toolbar across the top and then tap on Save. It saves it as a Photo in your camera roll and you then go into the Photo app to set it as either your Lock or Home screen wall paper. To do that you hit the share button in the lower left corner of the Photos app and choose Use as Wallpaper. From there you can choose to set to the Lock Screen, Home Screen or both.

When you open MyWalls it gives you a list of categories. Just tap any category to view the wallpapers. When you find a wallpaper that you like just tap it to activate the toolbar. The buttons across the top let you view more info about the wallpaper (title, date published, and if uploaded by a user their name or just unknown), email it to friends, save it to your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad, or go back to the previous page.

Across the bottom of the app’s main window is an options menu bar. You can use this bar to toggle back and forth between Category view (described above), the Search function which allows you to type in a theme or subject to locate associated wallpapers, the Settings page, Share page, and the Info page. I tried out the Search function with a few searches of my own – Packers, cars, Kentucky, and dogs, but only cars returned any wallpapers. So in my opinion, the quickest way to find a wallpaper that you want is to first use the search function, and if there’s nothing there then head back to the category page and look around for the next best thing.

Next I tried out the Settings page. On this page you can give your name, web site, and email address to submit and share your own pictures. It lists a couple of submission guidelines, but fortunately they really only say that you’re permitting MyWalls to use your image. You still get to retain ownership and copyright. Why would anyone give them the photos if they didn’t retain ownership? I am glad the developer chose to do it this way. As a result, I submitted one of my own pictures taken with the great camera on my iPhone 4. To upload images into MyWalls just touch the Share button in the lower main menu bar. From here you just browse and upldoad your wallpaper. The upload process is real simple, and you get a message at the end saying they’ll review it soon.

The last button is the Info button. It gives you the obligatory information about the app such as the latest news about MyWalls, the option to request new wallpaper, to share MyWalls with your friends via email (link to download MyWalls), and to get help if you need it.

The strengths of this app are first that it is simple. The interface is intuitive and easy to get around in. I wish it could save the pictures to your home screen or lock screen from within the app, but I’m almost certain thats a problem with the iPhone OS and not the app itself as none of the other apps that offer the option to save pictures to the home screen do it natively either. One other nit-picky thing is that when you open a picture, at first there is a back and forward arrow at the bottom (see image below). I assume these are there to scroll through the photos in your category or those returned after your search, but annoyingly an ad jumps up and covers the buttons (see the soccer ball image below). Why would you do this? Anyway, you can get around it just by swiping to move forward and backward, so I guess you don’t technically need the arrows, but the arrows being covered is frustrating. The developer should move the arrows above the ads or remove them altogether. Since this is a free app, removing the ads is probably not an option. Maybe they could offer a paid version so you don’t have to see the ads. As I said these aren’t the biggest of issues, but I thought they were worth pointing out.

The second strength is the photos. I found them to be beautiful. It is true this is a matter of taste, but I liked many of them. Be warned that there are a very few PG-13 photos. I opened the cartoons category and got a Sponge Bob picture and then a bunch of busty cartoon women. Though I am a bit prudish about such things, I was not offended by any of them. Again, it’s a mater a taste.

Finally, there is one problem – the pictures are only 320×480 resolution. The iPhone 4 screen’s resolution is 960×640. I hope the developer updates it to support this new resolution because this will make the images look great on the new iPhone while still looking great on the older phones. That said, none of the images looked bad on my iPhone 4. So it may not be a real issue. Below is the one I chose for now. But I will likely change it in a couple of days to one of the other great pictures in MyWalls.

Anytime you’re looking to get a sneak peak into the future just tap Robodamus and he’ll consult his never been wrong crystal ball.

Ok, so maybe Robodamus really can’t predict the future, but if you use him right you can definitely get a kick out of convincing others that he does! Created by James Purdy, Robodamus is uniquely designed to provide 3 specific types of fortune: insults, philosophical, and one’s you make up yourself. Now, depending on your preference you can customize the probability that Robodamus will give a specific type. Using a simple slider you can adjust whether you want more, less, or none at all of particular types. So if you’d like more insults than serious, just slide the Humor slider over to the right and slide the Serious and Custom sliders to the left. You can slide any of them all the way to the left to completely exclude them. It’s as simple as that.

For myself, I prefer the serious ones. It gives me something to look forward to. However, if you’ve got some gullible friends then you will definitely want to beef up your custom ones. Adding a custom fortune is really easy. All you’ve got to do is type it in and save it. Robodamus then plucks from your customs at random. So, if you’re dating someone you really like just conjure up some romantic diddies and introduce your boo to the wonders of Robodamus!

Robodamus is the type of app that’s entertainment value relies solely on the creativity of it’s beholder. If you’re a bit of a prankster and really creative you’ll get a total kick out of it. You can get gullible people thinking that the app is genius and you can convince significant others that you guys are meant to be! But, if you’re as sharp as a butter knife and have the social skills of a gnat then you probably won’t enjoy this app as much. Just running it for standard fortunes has short lived entertainment value.

Overall the sounds and graphics the app provides are really sweet. If I could change anything about the app it’d be to make Robodamus talk. I feel like he should recite the fortunes verbally and maybe even laugh at you a little bit when you get an insulting fortune. Maybe even give a serious look or gasp if he reveals a not so good fortune. Currently he’s somewhat personality-less because aside from swinging into view and revolving his robotic hands he’s more or less a stiff. I’d also love to see Twitter and Facebook integrated so peoples fortunes can be posted for all their friends to see.

Pros:

Great sounds and graphics
Easy to use interface
Creating custom fortunes can be really funny if you’re creative
Over 270 included fortunes

Cons:

I wish Robodamus talked and interacted more

Red Dwarf The Dibblifier

If you lived in the UK in the late 1980′s and 90′s then you certainly know all about the popular British comedy Red Dwarf. Now with the help of Grant Naylor Productions Ltd and their app Red Dwarf The Dibblifier you can transform yourself, friends and family into Dibbley’s!

To begin Dibblifying you can either choose a pic from your photo library or snap a fresh one. Once ready you’ll see a series of colored dots and lines that you need to line up on the face. Just touch the dots to move them. Once you’ve got ‘em where they need to be, press the Dibblifier button and watch ‘em go! Before your eyes the pic will morph from normal, to completely Dibblified, big crazy teeth and all! Once finished you can choose to edit the pic, save it within the app to “My Dibbley’s” create a video showing the transformation, and can share your Dibblified image or video via Facebook, Twitter (image only), or email.

One thing’s for sure, everything about this app will have people reminiscing about Red Dwarf’s glory days. Not only can you use it to Dibblify people and pets alike, you can also download full seasons of the television series straight from iTunes. That being said, I have to admit that I was disappointed with the overall performance of this app. I found the quality of the Dibblified images, the interface, the instructions on how to Dibblify, and the number of available options to be sub par for the $2.99 price.

How did I come to these conclusions? Well, it took me quite a few tries to figure out how to create the best Dibbley’s. With an app this simple I expected it to be very quick and easy. I tried it out a few times without reading any instructions and the results were really bad. So from there I went straight to the help page. Once there the first thing I noticed was the extremely small font. While squinting my way through the Help page I learned that instead of the Help page telling me how to Dibblify it told me to go to the Info page to find the instructions. I immediately thought to myself, “Why wouldn’t it tell me on the Help page?”. Definitely not the most user friendly layout.

After getting the hang of it I was able to Dibblify my pics pretty well. One thing I noticed is that close up, straight forward facing pics work best. As you can see from my pic below, pics where faces are tilted don’t come out very well. For me, I’d like to see quite a bit of improvement to this app for it to be worth the money. I’d like to see some additional editing options added so you can use a wider variety of pics and still get good results. Features like the ability to move/edit/crop/re-size images would be nice. I also would like to see the interface laid out a little better. In addition to what I mentioned about the help page, I found that after you Dibblify a pic and save or share it the same menu keeps popping up continuously until you choose to exit the page. I realize this doesn’t sound bad, but trust me, you’ll choose the same option more than once before you realize you need to exit the page. It really should just go back to the main page on it’s own. The ability to edit a previously saved Dibbley would be nice addition as well.

Overall I’d say this app has promise, but it needs quite a bit more work done before it’s worth the $2.99 price point. I can see where the Dibblified images have the potential to generate some laughs, but as it stands today I found the sub par quality of my Dibbley’s to generate more confusion than laughter.

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things about going to Costco is the free food samples. If you’re a fan of free samples then how would you like to get one everytime you leave the house? The DreamWalk entertainment app is all about doing just that. Created by DreamWalk Pty. Ltd., this app is your “mobile treasure hunt”. Based on your current location it shows you all of the participating businesses in your area that are giving away free products and discounts.

So how does it work? DreamWalk is basically a lead generation tool for businesses. Business who participate are doing so because they want to increase foot traffic to their stores. To be involved they’ve got to agree to give away a certain amount of free product. The amount of free product could range anywhere from 1 free mini camcorder to 150 free kids watches.

DreamWalk is really easy to use. From the main menu you can choose to Hunt For Prizes, search for prizes in Freeroam Mode, view your Prize Bag, and to Learn The Basics. Hunt for prizes allows you to search for particular prizes to win. Personally I think this part of the app could use some additional options because currently you have to think of a prize to enter and search for. There needs to be an A-Z listing and a way to search for prizes based on value here. Freeroam Mode brings you to the meaty part of the app where you can navigate between the Prize Map, the Prize Bag, the Stamp Album, and Extras (aka – the settings page). Prize Bag is where all of your prizes go when they’re ready to be redeemed, and Learn The Basics is essentially the help page.

DreamWalk provides you with three categories of prizes that you can redeem/win: Instant Prize, Collector Stamp, and Treasure Hunt. Instant Prizes are represented by a star symbol and are the easiest to collect, unfortunately they’re also the cheapest. These are your cologne and perfume samples, $10 gift certificates, free ringtones, that kind of thing. To redeem these you just touch the star, add it to your prize bag, and if it’s an in-store giveaway you’ll get a promo code that you show to the cashier at the store, or if it’s online you’ll get a link that you can click on to redeem. Collector Stamp prizes are typically more expensive and require you to show up at multiple locations to collect enough stamps to spell a word. Once you’ve collected all the letters required the prize will be moved to your Prize Bag for redemption. Treasure Hunt requires you to solve a series of clues to be able to win the prize. Only the first clue for each prize is shown on the map, it’s up to you to figure it out from here.

Overall DreamWalk is a unique app that’s well put together and can be quite entertaining if you give it some time. Currently the prize network is very limited, so if you download the app today and there’s nothing available in your area don’t be surprised. Building a vast prize network is no easy task and will take some time to become established. If you’re curious about what prizes, if any, are available in your area you can go to the DreamWalk website to view the global prize map. DreamWalk is completely free so it’s something that’s probably worth downloading and checking from time-to-time to see if any cool freebies are available in your area.
