Raaaaahhhh! Fingerzilla is so stupid it’s fun! Created by Inert Soap, LLC., this game is a ridiculously simple concept that’s surprisingly addictive. As you may have guessed by the name, the purpose of the game is to reek havoc on towns and cities with your giant sized Godzilla finger, smashing every building, vehicle, and fleeing pedestrian that crosses your path. You only have a limited amount of time to cause your devastation so you’ve got to tap furiously but with precession. You earn points for causing damage, but you earn the most points when you reduce whole buildings to smoldering rubble. Tap, tap, tap cities, people, cars, and helicopters into oblivion. Cause as much disaster as you can, as quickly as you can, and if successful you’ll climb up the ranks on the OpenFient leaderboard.

In all honesty, my first impression of Fingerzilla was that it sucked. I played it once and was not impressed. Much to my surprise though, the more I played it the more I liked it. I don’t know if this means I have a destructive nature or what, but there’s something intoxicating about wandering through these little worlds and squashing everything in site. I actually chuckle a little bit when I gobble up and smash pedestrians fleeing from the burning buildings. Muahahahahahahaaaaa! Take that accountant (chomp)!

As mentioned you’ve got a limited time to work with in each level; anywhere from a minute and a half to five minutes per level depending on which one you’re playing. As you chomp, crunch, and destroy you not only earn points but you can earn time bonuses and sample platters. Each providing you with greater opportunity to destroy more and to wrack up a bunch more points. All in all there are six city smashing levels, each one progressively larger and slightly more challenging than the last. After completing one level you unlock the next. It’s very easy to graduate through levels. The game itself really isn’t about defeating levels, it’s more or less about finding which city you can cause the most destruction in and raising as much hell as possible. For those interested in taking their destruction to the next level there’s an optional $0.99 in app upgrade called the Mutation Pack, that gives you Power Smash, which lets you destroy whole buildings with one touch, Fire Breath which incinerates nearby buildings, Gobble which instantly devours all fleeing citizens, and Roar which sends people running into the streets in fear.

Overall Fingerzilla is a surprisingly fun game despite it’s dumbed down nature. It’s the type of game that you can turn to as a stress reliever and to cure boredom. If you’re the type that enjoys an intellectually challenging game this wouldn’t be for you. But if you’re the type that just likes to break $%^#, then you’ll have a total blast with this game. Both kids and adults will enjoy this one.

New York 3D Rollercoaster Rush, developed by Digital Chocolate Inc., is as exciting as any of their previous 3D Rollercoaster games. I personally am a big fan of this game series. The graphics and audio are great (you can use your own soundtrack if you like)! Most importantly the game-play is fun and quick. This is the perfect game to pickup and play when you have a few idle minutes to burn. Each level flies by quickly, just like a real roller coaster, however the fun and difficultly level keep you coming back to levels again and again. New York City makes for a great backdrop with sky scraping peaks, huge drops and gut wrenching curves. It’s important that you have a firm grasp on you roller coasters speed to both maximize your points and time, but to also ensure you don’t fly off the track and crash.

Slapshot Frenzy

If you like hockey games, but would rather just crank slapshots at the net instead of playing a full 5 on 5 game then you may want to checkout Slapshot Frenzy. Compatible for both iPhone and iPod Touch, this game is all about practicing and making precision hockey shots. In this game there are two different modes of game-play: Free Skate Mode where there are no defenders other than the goalie, and Classic Mode where you can play a 2 on 2 half rink battle verses the computer. The object of the game is to score as many goals as possible in the allotted amount of time. Making goals isn’t as easy as sending the puck in the direction of the net. To score points you’ve got to be nimble, deceptive, and precise.

Alright, let’s get down to business. I myself am a big fan of hockey games and apps, and have been ever since I played Blades of Steel waaaaay back in the day. So of course I was super pumped to tryout the Slapshot Frenzy app. At first glance it’s easy to tell that this game has the goods with respect to graphics, sounds, animation, etc. After all Skyworks Interactive, the creators of Slapshot Frenzy have a long track record for creating quality iPhone and iPod Touch apps. But after playing Slapshot Frenzy I’d have to say I myself am not the biggest fan. Why? Two reasons: Half rink hockey and game controls.

After playing board crashing, cross checking, fast paced, intense hockey video games all my life I was rather disappointed with the half rink game-play of Slapshot Frenzy. I felt like it just didn’t offer much excitement. In Free Skate Mode all you do is try to make as many goals as possible and in Classic Mode you do the same, but you’re playing against two rather lifeless defenseman who more or less just gather up lose pucks and carry them past mid ice. I found the game controls to be rather awkward and felt like they made the game less fun. To move your players you drag your finger around the screen where you want them to go, and to pass or shoot you double tap the screen. With these types of controls you essentially obstruct your view while playing the game, which doesn’t seem very intuitive to me. In my opinion this game is much better suited for gamepad style controls.

Overall the graphics are decent, the game-play is ok, and the game itself, even though it’s simple, is rather challenging. In addition to two modes of game-play the app includes a global leader board so you can compare your skills verses the other Slapshot Frenziests out there. Best of all there’s a free Slapshot Frenzy Lite version, so before you decide whether or not your want to buy the full version you can take it for a free test drive!
