Flashcards for iPad

Flashcards for iPad is an app designed for the little tikes in your family. Preschoolers will really enjoy this $5.99 app from INKids. It uses the whole langauge approach to help them learn to read and spell.

When you open Flashcards there are three rows of icons. Tap one of the eight categories in the top two rows and you get a game for your child to play. It gives a picture and both spells and pronounces the name of the image. Tap the picture and you get a sound associated with that image. In the animals category it makes the sound the animal makes. Tap the speaker icon next to the word and you get the word pronounced again. You can tap it over and over to hear the word or sound. If you wait a few seconds it will automatically advance to the next slide with a new image and word. Or you can swipe the image to the left or right to go forwards or backwards.

The bottom three categories on the Home screen are for Word Match. It shows you an image and audibly asks, “Is this a …” and gives three options. For example, one screen showed a motorbike and asked, “Is this a spider, a motorbike, or a finger. It gave the sound of each of the three choices after it pronounced the word. If you get it right it says, “Yep, well done.” If you get it wrong it says, “Try again.” The second time it says, “Close. Give it another go.”

The Spelling Game shows you the image and has two rows of words. The top row is greyed out a little and shows the actual word. The bottom is the letters of the words mixed up and out of order. Your little guy or gal drags the letter to the upper row. When he or she does it pronounces the sound and makes a ding sound if you get it right. If you get it wrong it pronounces the letter you incorrectly dragged to the upper row and bounces it back down to the lower row.

The final option on the bottom row of the Home screen is Shuffle. It gives you words from any of the upper eight categories, so you are not using only one category at a time.

In the row at the bottom is a tiny toolbar. The first icon looks like a speaker and will mute the music that plays. The lock button locks the icon so your toddler won’t accidentally exit the game he or she is playing or get into the info screen and change the settings. This attention to detail is what makes this is a great app.

If you do open the settings screen, you will see choices for Sound, Record Sounds, Languages, Presentations, Feedback and About INKids. The really interesting features are the Record Sounds and Presentation screens. The first lets you record your own words for the sounds, so that the word will be said in your own voice. First listen to the original sound to know exactly what is being said. Then choose the red record button and record it in your voice. It will take you a long time to go through all of them, so I recommend just choose a category at a time.

The Presentation tab lets you choose how the app behaves. You can have the slides move automatically and advance them as fast or slow as you like. It ranges from 5 to 30 seconds.

I think Flashcards for iPad is a very good app. To help test it I showed it to my little nephew who is turning three. He absolutely loved it and his mother wanted to take my iPad home with her so he could play it. The only reason I am not giving it a full five fingers is the delay from tapping the home screen is a little long. My nephew got frustrated and kept tapping and tapping.

One improvement that would make this app useful for teachers is the ability to export the screen to an external display via the VGA/Dock adapter. I could see a preschool teacher using the app with her entire class hooked up to a projector.

iZombie: Death March

Head shots, high speed chases, and blood spatter, what’s not to love! iZombie: Death March is a 2D birds eye view shooter game where your fingers do the talking and let off shotgun blasts toward a relentless wave of zombies, chainsaw wielding monsters, demonic dogs, flying skulls and more. Do you have what it takes to survive the onslaught?

Created by Sonic Boom Inc., and available for the hard to beat price of FREE, iZombie: Death March offers you six stress inducing, tap-n-tilt requiring, shotgun blasting levels of fun. You have three difficulty levels from which to choose (Easy, Normal, and Death Wish). If you’re a pansy and choose Easy then you’ll probably cruise through all six chapters in less than 30 minutes. But for those with a little more gusto, the game offers an hour or more of non-stop action when you choose higher difficulty levels.

Each level within the game offers a slightly different challenge. Zombies and other menacing characters come at you from all angles. To kill your devilish attackers you simply tap on them to fire your gun. Direct taps to the cranium inflict momentum haulting head shots that reduce your would be executioners into chunks. More difficult levels require you to shine a flashlight on your enemies prior to placing a cap in their dome. I really like the flashlight concept, because it adds to the suspense and stress of the game, unfortunately it doesn’t work as well as it could. Half the time I found the flashlight to move in different directions and sometimes not at all when using the exact same movements. Other levels require you to steer a truck around zombies in the street while at the same time firing shotgun blasts toward a massive beast. If the beast catches the vehicle you die. So whatever you do, keep the pedal to the medal, swerve like your life depends on it, and keep your finger fixed on the trigger.

At the end of each level you get a summary of your accomplishments like score, award, accuracy, total kills, limbs removed, head shots, and most kills at once. I didn’t care for these stats as much in the easier levels, but when you increase the difficulty and reach the more difficult chapters it’s kinda nice to see how you did.

Overall iZombie: Death March is a pretty ok game. It’s definitely a good time killer and seeing that it’s free it’s harmless to download so I definitely recommend that you check it out. Ideally I’d love to see the flashlight sensitivity and inaccuracy to be fixed and a bunch more chapters added to the game.

Elevators

Even amongst the sea of pristine graphics and realistic effects that today’s video games have to offer, I still crave the simplicity of the old school Atari classics like Joust, Pole Position, and Donkey Kong. Well, with Elevators, created by Roben Software Inc., you can revisit at least one of those. Elevators is in some ways a Donkey Kong clone, but instead of rescuing a fair maiden, the object of the game is to keep your job!

In this game you step into the shoes of an optimistic yet timid young lad named Eric. Eric enthusiastically shows up to his first day of work accompanied by his trusty canine sidekick Jaffa. His new boss, showing his tender side, enlightens Eric to the fact that the buildings elevators have run amuck, killing some residents. Eric needs to get to the elevator control room ASAP and fix the problem or else he loses his much needed job. The only problem is that the control room is on the roof of the high rise building and to get there Eric’s got to stare death in the face by ascending floor after floor, avoiding out of control elevators, trap doors, exploding bombs, and deadly bananas being hurled by a giant gorilla!

As simple as Elevators may sound, let me assure you it’s very challenging. You can choose between Easy, Medium, and Hard difficulty levels, which in my case Easy was certainly all that I could handle. So let’s talk a little about what makes Elevators challenging. First of all, the game only requires you to press one button, the Run button. When you press the Run button Eric starts gallivanting across the floor, but if you let go of it Eric doesn’t come to a stop, he starts running back to the other side of the level. So, because elevators are moving up and down at different times and in different directions, you’ll often find yourself pinned in a small area between two elevators where moving too far in either direction could mean instant death!

The moving elevators aren’t the least bit forgiving. If you touch them while the doors are closed they take away health, and if you’re caught underneath one or above them it rips you into pieces. As sinister as the elevators are there are some benefits to them. When they stop on a floor the doors open. If you catch a ride on a gold elevator it’ll take you all the way to the top floor for that stage. However, don’t get carried away and jump into a red elevator. If you do that it’ll take you straight back down to the bottom!

As if the slew of moving elevators weren’t challenging enough, you’ve got to also account for trap doors opening and closing, bombs exploding, and bananas coming at you from above. One thing’s for sure you’ve got to be on top of your game while playing. It’s pretty difficult to assess all of what’s going on and to time everything just right. Don’t be too discouraged if you keep falling through trap doors. It’s pretty much par for the course. You’ll certainly take lots of damage while playing, but thankfully there are ways to earn more health, extra lives, and bonus points. From time-to-time elevators will drop off health packages, hearts for extra lives, and little Jaffas (doggies) you can collect for bonus points. Try to get as many as you can because you’ll definitely need them if you want to generate a big score.

Overall I found Elevators to be a pretty entertaining game. I can’t lie, it definitely made me angry and frustrated at times, but that’s mainly because it’s harder than it looks. If you’re a fan of Donkey Kong and old school games then I think you’ll like this one. The graphics aren’t particularly amazing and the effects certainly aren’t cutting edge, but it’s definitely entertaining enough that you’ll probably want to keep it around and continue trying to one up your previous best score. The only thing I’ll warn you about is that I found the sound effects to be somewhat annoying after a while. I’d be nice to be able to have the option to turn off certain sound effects and/or to be able to listen to music on your iPod while playing. Currently there is neither.

Pros:

Fun and challenging game; can be very addicting
Easy to pickup; doesn’t require a long detailed tutorial before playing

Cons:

Sort of a Donkey Kong clone; although it definitely has it’s own unique twist
Sound effects can get old after a while and you can’t listent to your iPod while playing

Ring Runner

Patience my son, PATIENCE! Patience is just what you’ll need in Ring Runner by Octane Technologies. In this game for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad you must successfully navigate your ring by guiding it through wires of different paths and colors without touching the edges. As the screen slowly moves across, you’ll have to control your ring by moving it left, right, up and down, as well as rotating the ring with the button control set in the lower left corner. It will take a combination of using these two methods of control simultaneously to get good enough to advance. As you navigate your ring across the wires, pick up bonus items along the way like dollar points, shield protectors, a sizer bonus that enlarges your ring, or stars that give extra life and add 50 points to the overall score.

The name of the game is to have a steady hand and a whole lot of patience. Think back to the old classic “Operation” where you couldn’t touch the edges of the game board as you attempted to pluck out pieces. If you did a startling ZAP would scream out and you would lose a turn. Well Ring Runner has the same premise, but you are guiding a ring though an ever twisting wire obstacle while the screen slowly moves to the right. You touch the edge and you lose a ring. Touch the edge too many times and GAME OVER. Of course Ring Runner gives you a vibration shock, followed by a loud alarm & “Ouch graphic” every time you mess up; which is a bit startling, but adds to the overall value. The game is definitely challenging and you’ll need to exhibit composure and perseverance to get through it.

Ring Runner did a good job of providing colorful and unique themes with the level designs. There are six terrains in all and three levels within each. You need to complete each terrain three times (each level becoming increasingly harder) before you can advance to the next terrain. This feature differs from a lot of other games out there. In Ring Runner you basically have to complete the terrains on easy, medium, and hard in order to advance where in more conventional games its an option. Some players may find this repetitive.

The music in Ring Runner has left something to be desired. It sounds a bit generic and “canned”. It also becomes too repetitive. Another issue with Ring Runner is the “enable game sound” option that pops up every time you launch the app. This should be an option selection in the settings menu page, not a pop up feature every time the app opens. The game’s controls are pretty accurate. For additional value I would have liked to see the option of controlling the ring via the accelerometer in addition to the current control set. This feature could bring more interactivity and engagement to the gaming experience.

Ring Runner will need to add in more levels with future updates. The developer has it set up so that you need to complete each terrain three times before you can advance so really you have 18 levels of progressive difficulty in all to play (six levels total), but the game will need more variety to keep your interest for extended replay appeal. The app is quite challenging overall. It’s a unique idea and has potential to be a really slick game if refined. As of now, I’d recommend it to players that enjoy “finesse” type games that possess a steady finger and a stable temper.

We Rule

We Rule, created by ngmoco, Inc. is another take on a Farmville type game where the objective is to please the king and to expand his kingdom. To do so you must grow and sell crops quickly and efficiently, purchase new land, and decorate and develop the new properties. As with any games of this nature you’re ability to multitask and stay on top of all required tasks determines how quickly and far your kingdom expands. Once you start you begin a never ending journey that without your help quickly starts to spiral into disarray and neglect.

As you’d expect the game starts you out with next to nothing, requiring you to start digging gardens and planting crops right away. As your farmland begins to flourish you’re gradually asked to grow more and more varieties of food, starting with corn and graduating to wheat, onions, etc. As you progress you’re asked to create more and more farms, to decorate the land with things like trees, banners, fences, and lamp posts, and to purchase and develop new land with things like fortresses, castles and citadels.

Of course it takes dedication and a mild obsession to stay on top of all aspects of the game and to earn everything required to advance. There are multiple ways you can shortcut the game to leap ahead of other players and friends. You can flat out purchase things such as more coins, mojo (makes crops grow fast), and land via in app purchase, or you can invite as many of your Facebook friends and Twitter followers as possible with each new recruit earning you coins. The money you earn or buy is used to decorate the land with trees, banners, fences, lamp posts, street signs, wells, and more, and to purchase new land and to construct new buildings, fortresses, castles, and citadels.

Overall We Rule offers a lot for it’s free price tag. The graphics are good and the game provides hours upon hours of entertainment. It’s easily as good or better than other similar apps out there from a features and game-play perspective. There is however one major issue currently plaguing the game that is certain to have the king ordering for the beheading of its IT architects. Currently the game is riddled with service delays and connection outages. While playing I noticed regular service interruptions every 5-10 minutes. In many cases the game appears to proceed without issue, but when I exited the game and returned later I found that everything I had accomplished was lost. The developers really need to get a hold of this quickly because at the moment it’s borderline unacceptable. If you’re into these types of games I do recommend that you try We Rule, because when it’s working it’s a decent game, but seeing that there are so many connectivity issues at the moment you may not want to continue playing after getting an error message, and you may want to exercise caution when making in-app purchases.

Pounce

Solitaire lovers rejoice! Now there’s a game that incorporates everything you love about Solitaire minus the monotony and boredom. Pounce, created by Double Apps Inc., is an interactive and fast-paced spin on traditional Solitaire. The object of the game is similar in the sense that the ultimate goal is to get rid of all 52 of your cards, but the main differences being that you earn points and you can play with as many as four opponents simultaneously (computer or live people). The game-play is a super intense strategic free for all that demands your constant attention and an innate ability to constantly be one step ahead of your opponents. The first player to shell out all their cards and declare “POUNCE” wins!

If you’ve played Solitaire then Pounce will come very naturally to you. It essentially requires all of the same skills (attention to detail, strategy, a little bit of luck), only magnified to the nth degree. The most important area in the game is the center field area. That’s where all of your cards ultimately need to reside. In traditional solitaire there are four discard piles that you’re trying to create (one for each suit). In Pounce there can be as many as 20 discard piles of which all are fair game to everyone involved. Any player can lay cards on any pile at any time as long as it’s in the right order and suit. This puts a premium on each players ability to keep track of everything that’s going on in the game. A swiftly placed card can render opponents helpless in a matter of seconds.

Whether you’re playing against the computer or with friends over Bluetooth, Pounce is the type of game that keeps you fully engaged from beginning to end. Because of the frantic and fast paced nature of the game you end up feeling a rollercoaster of emotions as you play. One minute you feel unstoppable and another minute you feel completely helpless. Sometimes all the stars seem to align and every card you flip over happens to play and other times you can’t seem to get a brake and are competely stuck. One thing that’s great about having multiple players is that if you do get stuck you’re typically not stuck for long. Occassionally everybody can get stuck, which in those instances whoever earned the most points (placed more cards in center field) is the victor. But for the most part if you’re playing with more than 3 players the chances of everybody getting stuck is pretty slim.

Overall I found Pounce to be a fun and challenging game, and one that card game junkies and Solitaire lovers will enjoy. The interface is fairly simple to follow and the tutorial is extremely thorough. Playing with friends live over Bluetooth is without a doubt my favorite way to play. There’s something about playing real people face-to-face that’s hard to beat. Ideally though, I’d love to see a couple additional features added to the game in the future. The ability to play people over the Internet and the ability to play iPod music from within the app would be excellent additions.

Pros:

Multiplayer game-play is engaging and fast paced
Tutorial is very thorough and leaves no doubt on how to play the game
Is much more interesting than standard Solitaire
In-person multiplayer Bluetooth mode works perfectly

Cons:

Unable to play others over the Internet
No in app integration with iPod

Bernoulli Ball

Bernoulli Ball by Clever Martian can best be described as a curiously addictive and futuristic twist to traditional pinball games. The main differences are that you use your finger to redirect balls instead of paddles, and instead of fixed bumpers bouncing your ball all over the place you’ve got to deal with a variety of both fixed and moving obstacles (windmills, bouncing balls, gusts of wind, etc.). Just like pinball there’s no limit to how long you can play and the underlying goal is to wrack up the highest score possible. You can send as many as 5 balls screaming down the drain before your game is over.

Bernoulli Ball consists of four mini games (soon to be 12): Chute Me, The Factory, Rollin Ramps, and Ratchet Run. Each mini game is more or less cut from the same cloth, meaning they all require you to safely navigate balls around a variety of obstacles and into a chute. Each mini game presents a slightly different challenge from the next. The shape of the level and the obstacles involved all vary. Some levels have windmills, others have rotating platforms, some have gusts of wind, some have a mix of each, and all have vicious bouncing balls that fly onto the screen, ricochet mindlessly all over the place, and send your balls headed on the fast track toward the drain. One things for sure, this game is designed for multitaskers.

The longer you last the trickier the game gets. You have to navigate as many as 5 balls all at once toward the chute while at the same time constantly defending their position against all of the obstacles that the level has to throw at you. Amidst all of this you’re focused on achieving the highest score possible and one way to pad your score is to get the balls into the chute in perfect order. So let’s just think about this for a second. You’ve got to juggle as many as 5 balls at once, with multiple disruptive obstacles trying to send your balls down the drain, while also trying to keep track of what order their in, and trying to sneak them by an opening and closing roadblock to get them to the promised land. Let’s just say Bernoulli Ball can be a little intense at times.

Overall I found Bernoulli Ball to be a well put together game. It’s got nice game-play, a user friendly interface, decent graphics, and perfect sounds. Some levels I found to be much easier than others. I’m interested to see what the 8 new levels will bring to the game. The only knock I have against this game is that at first I was really drawn into it and played it over and over, but once I got the hang of it the game became somewhat monotonous. For example, I got into a streak on Rollin Ramps where I played for 20 consecutive minutes and elected to quit the game because I felt like I could go on for ever and ever. I’d like to see the difficulty ramped up a bit, but maybe that’s already being tackled in the new soon to be released levels. That being said, Bernoulli Ball is definitely an interesting game and worth checking out. It’s well worth the $0.99 price point and also offers a free Bernoulli Ball Lite version if you’d like to try it before you buy it.

Pros:

Engaging and multitask inducing game-play

Unique concept; soon to include 12 mini-games

Cons:

The game may feel monotonous the longer you play it

Listen, if you love the idea of owning fish but can’t seem to keep them alive for long, and hate cleaning the tank, then it’s time to call it quits and get yourself some virtual fish. Tap Fish, created by Bayview Labs LLC, lets you own, buy, sell, and breed your own virtual fish. Once you get the hang of it you’re essentially in charge of your own aquarium. There are tons of different varieties of fish and multiple different tanks and levels that you can earn and buy. If you want to see what other people are working with you can visit neighboring tanks and over time if you level up enough your tank can become a featured neighbor tank.

Tap Fish offers 27+ exotic fish including killer whales, sharks, and sting rays, over 40 different tank accessories like plants, reefs, caves, and mermaids, and 50 tanks and levels. The way the game works is you gain experience the better you take care of you fish and the more your aquarium thrives. To get new fish, tanks, and accessories you need to either earn or buy coins. There are a variety of different ways that you can earn coins. You can breed fish to create new species and clean neighbors tank just to name a few. The more attention and TLC you give your fish, and the more efficiently you run your aquarium, the more experience you’ll earn and the more pimped out your tanks and fish collection will be. But, if you’re lazy and you just want to get to buying fish without earning them, you can purchase versions of the app that include anywhere from 25-150 fishbucks.

Overall Tap Fish is a decent game. If you’re into virtual world games like this then you’ll definitely enjoy it. Feeding the fish, breeding the fish, watching them grow, and accessorizing the tank can be fun if you’ve got enough fishbucks. Personally I’m not the biggest fan of apps that offer more points/bucks if you purchase tiered paid versions of the app. I prefer games that stick to making you earn points/bucks just by playing the game. I find games that go the tiered purchasing route make it too drawn out to earn your own points/bucks. So, since I’m not into buying the upgrades I typically lose interest in games like this pretty fast. Nonetheless, plenty of people enjoy these types of games. And as far as Tap Fish is concerned, it provides decent graphics, plenty of options, and without a doubt gives users an amusing and calming personal aquarium experience. If you like virtual world games then you should definitely try out Tap Fish.

Pros:

Fairly realistic personal aquarium
Ability to breed different species of fish makes it interesting
Ability to view other people’s aquariums is a nice touch

Cons:

It’s free, but not really; you’ll likely want to upgrade to a paid version to get more fishbucks
