Tomb Rush

In the action puzzler Tomb Rush the pharaoh’s tomb is under attack by a relentless swarm of monsters and it’s your job to protect the pharaoh’s remains at all costs. Your only means of defense is to kill anything and everything in site, but the problem is the weaponry at your disposal is limited. Starting with as little as a wall mounted crossbow you must pluck monsters with precision shots. Your propensity to kill determines the length of your game and the number of defense mechanisms at your disposal. Strategy, timing, and coordination are key to earning big points and successfully protecting the tomb.

Created by Volcano Computer Tech Co., Tomb Rush is an action puzzler that at first may seem a bit blah, but after you get the hang of it quickly becomes a very fun to play and tough to put down game. The entire game takes place inside of the pharaoh’s tomb. A flood of one-track minded portly cavemen charge into the tomb, in no particular order, in an attempt to seize and conquer the tomb. You can unlock up to 7 “powerful properties”, like trap doors, candles that function as flame throwers, spring loaded platforms, lightening esque bolts of energy, and more to defend the tomb. As mentioned you start with only a crossbow, but quickly earn new properties based on number of kills. When you see a hovering key pop up you’ll want to touch it ASAP as it activates a new property.

The more properties you earn the better. They essentially serve as back up defenses for when monsters slip through you first, second, third, etc. lines of defense. When monsters approach just touch any of your properties to use them. Some take longer to “reload” than others so you want to make sure you time their use perfectly. The crossbow and the spring board fire pretty rapidly, but the trapdoor and candle take a while to reload and if you set them off too early the monsters will blow right past them unscathed. A great fall back weapon is the pharaoh power. If you touch the pharoah and then swipe your finger across the screen it sends a bolt of lightening jutting toward your target. It takes a while to use this one though so you pretty much only want to use it as a last resort.

Tomb Rush is a super simple concept that somehow became ultra addictive the more you play it. At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it because I played it a half a dozen times or so and thought to myself the game was kinda boring. But apparently that’s only because I stunk at it. Once I got the hang of it and started unlocking more and more weapons and defenses and was mowing down wave after wave of monsters I thought to myself this game is pretty sweet! After getting on a roll and unveiling a hard to kill boss that ushered in newer and uglier monsters I was hooked!

Tomb Rush builds on itself as you play and demands 100% attention to detail and precision timing. Monsters come at you straight on in the early stages of the game, but eventually they come at you from multiple angles. Having the ability to defend against waves of enemies from multiple angles for sustained periods of time is key to scoring big. Once you get to that point in the game it’s extremely hard to put down. If you enjoy simpler game concepts that are challenging and you can turn to at a moments notice from some instant gratification, then you’ll really enjoy Tomb Rush.

Pros:

Offers good replayability; really addictive once you give it some time
Great game for both children and adults
Games can last seconds to minutes depending on skill level; great time waster

Cons:

No onine global leaderboard or social media integration

Grumps

What does it say of me if I saw the name of this app and was immediately drawn to it? HAHA, long week I guess If you like dodge ‘em games then you may want to try your luck at Grumps. Trapped in a 2D world you’re forced to weave in and out of falling emoticons in an endless and increasingly difficult journey to stay alive. If you’ve got good vision and excellent tilt reflexes, you may score big in this game.

Created by Mojo Software, Grumps is a very simple concept, that’s basic to the eye yet difficult to master. Disgruntled emoticons rain down endlessly from above with increasingly smaller windows of space separating them. It’s your job to tilt your iPhone/iPod/iPad side-to-side to navigate the avatar, which happens to bear a striking resemblance to developer Carl Andrews, in and out of the way of the falling frowny faces. You’ve got a little wiggle room for error because you can get touched up to 3 times before you’re toast. However, if you put yourself in the wrong position, getting hit three times in a row is really easy to do.

Much to their dismay, the Grumps aren’t the only emoticons on the block. There are also happy faces and bombs. Collecting happy faces gives you bonus points so you can pad your score a bit as you play. Keep in mind Grumps includes Open Feint so padding your score equates to bragging rights on the global leaderboard. Bombs are the most critical things to gather in my mind. Once you’ve grabbed a bomb, you can save it for when you need it most. When you’re cornered and it’s a certainty that the Grumps are about to give you the smackdown just tap the screen to unleash the bombs fury, obliterating all the Grumps on the screen. Collecting bombs and smiley faces are a must, but keep in mind that many times they’re set up as a trap and it’s almost a given that you’ll get hit by a Grump or two trying to snag one. No biggie if you’ve got three lives left, but once you’re down to your last one, you’ll really want to pick and choose when to go for them.

So, what’d I think about Grumps? Meh, it’s okay. I played it, didn’t really love it, not really sure if I’ll play it again. I found the tilting sensitivity to be a little on the slow side, and overall I guess I just wish it was a bit more polished. The sound effects seem a bit cheesy to me and the graphics although they may be appealing to many, are a bit rough around the edges and kind of remind me of scenery from Pee Wee’s Playhouse. At a cost of only $0.99 it’s hard to say that this game’s not worth the money because it does offer those that enjoy retro looking dodge ‘em games something to add to their collection. However, I’m not really sure that Grumps is going to be everybody’s cup of tea.

Pros:

Challenging, will give dodge ‘em game lovers a run for their money
Keeps you engaged as you play

Cons:

Tilt responsiveness seems a bit slow and unresponsive
Will be fun for some, not fun for others

Gravity Runner

Watch out! Colin is on the loose and he can defy gravity! Gravity Runner is an amazingly addictive retro inspired game that’s a classic in the making and an excellent addition to anyone’s arsenal of apps.

Created by We Are Colin Ltd., Gravity Runner is a race against the clock where Colin, an adventure loving daredevil charges through levels laced with deadly obstacles. He leaps over gorges, rows of spikes, and other death inducing doozies that surround him from both above and below. Colin possesses the power to reverse gravity which allows him to overcome challenges that non one else can. To succeed in Gravity Runner you must master the ability to reverse gravity at will, and time the transition perfectly so you can overcome all obstacles in your path.

Gravity Runner is almost like playing two games at the same time. Think of Super Mario Bros but with the ceiling being in play too. In the game you basically sprint non-stop across the screen, needing to leap high and far to clear rows of deadly spikes and bottomless gorges. Some obstacles simply can’t be cleared without reversing gravity so with a double tap of the screen you’ll send yourself soaring toward the ceiling. All obstacles from above function the same as the one’s below, just in reverse. To get to the end you’ve got to perfect the double tap motion, timing it just right so you can safely land on solid ground, whether it’s above or below. The slightest misstep and you’re toast.

Reversing gravity is a must to clear every level, so don’t think you can skirt by without it. I found the reverse gravity twist of the game very entertaining and curiously challenging. Because you’re moving at a fast pace and many obsticles don’t show their ugly face until after you’ve already committed to a move, the ability to double tap and reverse gravity only compounds the decision making process required for the game. It’s often that you’ll find your fingers fighting your brain while playing. It totally rocks and in my mind makes it stand out from many of the other traditional retro runner games.

I know what you’re thinking. The graphics of Gravity Runner look so weak. I’m playing 3D augmented reality stuff, why would I want to step back in time to 1986? Let me tell ya. I said the same stuff to myself, but after a couple minutes with the game I realized 20 minutes had passed. Gravity Runner is seriously fun and without a doubt worth every penny. If you’re looking for a fast-paced game that’s ideal for killing some time, don’t hesitate to download this app.

Pros:

Fast paced, extremely addictive
Good quality, decent replayability
Sticks true to it’s retro theme (graphics, sounds, etc.)

Cons:

Graphics could definitely be better, but I guess they’re part of it’s charm
Story line is a little basic, but the fun game-play makes up for it

NinJump

Here’s another endless climber that’s super fast paced, and forces you to leap, slice, and dice your way to new heights and high scores. In NinJump you’re a pint sized yet stealthy ninja that must climb high above the dojos, higher than ever before, and along the way must defend one’s self against all kinds of enemies like evil squirrels, pesky rival ninjas, angry birds, throwing stars with bad intentions, and bombs. One little mistake and you’re toast!

Calling NinJump by Backflip Studios fast paced would be an understatement. The ninja pretty much sprints up walls. Enemies in the game are plentiful and leave little room for error. Enemy squirrels sprint across clothes lines, throwing stars come soaring across the screen, and rival ninjas cling to walls waiting for your slightest mistake. You must kill and avoid these enemies at all costs. They come and go quickly, and never leave you room to breathe.

There are two essential skills you must master to dominate the leaderboard. First, you must master the sword. Tapping the screen sends the ninja leaping laterally to the opposite wall. While in the air the ninja flails his samurai sword. Use must use this sword to slice and dice your airborne enemies. Failing to do so will send you falling to you doom. Secondly you must master leaping. Enemies fixed to walls cause instant death if you touch them. Not even your samurai sword can save you from these guys. So each time you leap you must be cognisant of where you’ll land. If you’re timing stinks, then you better learn how to grow some wings.

Climbing high is really tough in this game, so you’ll want to make sure you take advantage of every bonus that comes your way. If you see a blue bubble, grab it! It gives you a film of protectiveness that lets you soar ahead with little regard for what awaits. It’s only temporary protection, but it’s so worth it. Secondly, if you slice up three enemies in a row, your ninja hits hyper-drive and somersaults his way through entire sections without worry of taking damage. So, like I said before, mastering the sword is essential to dominance!

Overall NinJump is a game you should definitely check out. The best way I can describe it is a more fast paced, poor mans version of Ninjatown. The only real differences being that the graphics and game aren’t as involved and NinJump is completely FREE! NinJump falls into the category of ultimate time wasters. Even if you only have one minute to spare you can probably crank out 2-3 games. It’s got decent replayability and has all the sharing extras that we’ve come to love like Open Feint, Facebook, Twitter, and email. As you’d expect with a free game, NinJump serves ads while you play, but they’re displayed across the top, and aren’t that noticeable. If you haven’t already downloaded NinJump while reading this review, then stop waisting time and go get it now!

Pros:

Fast Paced, fun, and addictive
Great time waster
Really tough, decent replayability
It’s FREE!

Cons:

Not particularly unique, slight twist on other endless climbers

Doodle Jump in reverse is probably the best way to describe uFall. It’s got a doodle theme, similar looking characters, lots of moving platforms, and not so cool energy zapping bad guys. My initial reaction when I first played this game was that there’s nothing surprising about it. It seemed a little too much like Doodle Jump for my taste. However, after playing it for a while it actually began to grow on me. I noticed more and more subtle differences between the two that allowed me to lower my guard a bit and start enjoying it. Don’t get me wrong, most of the game is a complete rip off of Doodle Jump, but it seems to offer enough differences to make the game pretty fun.

Created by Carlo Lanzotti, uFall has the look and feel of a single level endless game, however it does offer multiple levels. If you fall long enough and reach a goal, you transition to a new level that offers an even more difficult free falling experience. The entire object of the game is to fall further than you’ve fallen before. As you’d expect there’s lots of things trying their best to prevent this from happening. The most prominent of which is the collapsing ceiling of jagged glass that forever stalks you downward, shredding you to pieces with the slightest touch. When this sinister killer is near you’ll know because an eerie and scary sound persists until you’re a safe distance away.

There are also lots of other obstacles that make your journey increasingly more difficult. As with Doodle Jump, the most challenging part of the journey is navigating the plethora of platforms and avoiding monsters. The variety of platforms in this game can be both helpful and deadly. Falling platforms help you skip ahead but can also lead you straight to monsters. Spring loaded platforms often hold energy replenishing goodies, but bounce you upward as a trade off. Essentially, when you make contact with anything other than platforms and goodies you lose some energy and get bounced upward. Early on in the game being bounced upward isn’t particularly detrimental, but as the number of platforms and monsters increase, the slightest bounce upward can set you back just enough for the jagged glass ceiling of death to smash you.

As with Doodle Jump the goodies sprinkled throughout the game help you stay alive and provide much needed skip aheads. Fruits and coffee provide you with energy replenishing goodness. Often times these nutritious goodies are snuggled tightly against monsters so if you’re to redeem them you need to do it with utmost precision. There are magic balloon and monster ball bonuses that give you special powers allowing you to temporarily decend downward without restriction. Clocks are also helpful so make sure to grab as many of those as you can. Clocks temporarily freeze the ceiling of death, buying you extra time to slip further and further away.

Overall uFall is pretty fun game. As mentioned, much of it is a clone of Doodle Jump, just reversed, so inherently that’s going to have an impact on it’s overall rating. The graphics are pretty good, the characters are decent, but again, it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. I’d say the game-play takes a little getting used to, but the longer I played it the more I enjoyed it. It’s definitely a good value for it’s $0.99 price point, and if you’re a fan of Doodle Jump you’ll probably enjoy the reverse twist it provides.

Pros:

Well put together and quite addictive
Quick and sporadic game-play; great time waster
Decent value for the price

Cons:

Too much like Doodle Jump (just in reverse)
Characters and theme are not unique (wish they were)
No global leaderboard

CargoCopter

I don’t know about you, but I have a certain love for old school style 2D games; especially flying games. So when I came across the mission based 2D flying game CargoCopter I couldn’t resist taking it for a spin. There’s something about flying through seemingly insurmountable challenges and accomplishing missions that’s hard to pass up. Unfortunately, my overwhelming love affair for mission based flying games was sent into a tail spin after playing CargoCopter.

Created by Terence Palmer, CargoCopter challenges players to fly a helicopter over, under, between, and around buildings, walls, moving objects, explosives, and more to capture and safely deliver cargo. Using the game’s virtual joystick you lift off, lower, accelerate, and decelerate. To acquire cargo you must fly to within an ear shot of the cargo and then drop your hook and line to capture it. Continuing to hold down the green hook and line button ensures you’re able to retain your cargo as you fly it back to home base.

CargoCopter offers 15 different missions that you can pick and choose to play in any order that you want. The missions themselves are essentially pass/fail, with the greatest indicator of success being the amount of time it takes to complete each mission. The levels are short in distance, but based on the level of difficulty, can take several minutes to complete. If you crash or get blown up your mission is over, with the exception of crashing into water, which for whatever reason, just sends you back to the beginning of the level with the clock still running.

So far it’s probably hard to tell why I wasn’t the biggest fan of CargoCopter. I mean, it offers 2D gaming, flying, and challenging missions so what’s not to like? Well for me, the single biggest turn off for CargoCopter is the way the game reacts to the game controls (the responsiveness). From my perspective the game controls feel excessively exaggerated, making the game rather unenjoyable. For example, when you move the joystick upward to lift off you continue soaring upward much farther than you want to. The same thing goes with moving forward. I found myself hovering up and down, and back and forth continuously, never really able to keep a consistent hover. The lack of precise control is exacerbated when you are carrying cargo. The cargo has the tendency to twirl in circles around the helicopter as you transport it, which in turn negatively impacts the helicopter’s responsiveness and flight pattern. When you combine that lack of precise control, the enhanced difficulty of control with cargo attached, and the obstacles within the game, it makes for a rather frustrating gaming experience.

I realize after playing CargoCopter that the game is intended to have short and crisp levels, with the challenge being in the mastery of controlling a difficult to control helicopter. However, from my own perspective I feel that this approach limits the enjoyment of the game. I’d prefer playing a game that offers precision control and longer more challenging levels.

There were a couple of other aspects of the game that influenced my overall rating. Currently you can pick and choose any level that you want to play, meaning you can go straight to level 15 if you want. This isn’t a biggie, but I went straight to level 15, completed it rather quickly, and felt afterward felt like doing that took a little bit of the mystery and luster out of the game. Secondly, I uncovered a minor UI bug. When you press the pause button you’re presented with two options, resume and main. When I pressed the “main” button to go back to the main menu it didn’t do anything, it stayed on the same screen.

All in all CargoCopter looks fun on the outside, and offers a decent amount of gaming and challenge for it’s $0.99 price point. However, the gaming experience for most may feel quite frustrating and unecessarily akward. One thing I can say with certainty is that it’s an accomplishment to complete all 15 levels in easy mode. If you can do it in hard mode then I’d like to shake your hand. I myself probably won’t be coming back to this game on a regular basis, but for those that invite a frustrating challenge, CargoCopter may be just the game for them!

Pros:

Levels are relatively quick to play; doesn’t require a large time committment
Graphics are fairly decent

Cons:

Joystick control and responsiveness is exagerated and awkward
Game can be quite frustrating for impatient gamers
There are only 15 levels

Fly Vs. Car

Fly Vs. Car won’t blow you away with it’s graphics and game-play but it’ll certainly touch your heart. This retro 2D Atari-like throwback takes seconds not hours to play, and half of all profits generated through it’s downloads are being donated to Childs Play Charity which puts toys in the hands of sick children all over the globe.

Fly Vs. Car, created by Snow Day Games, is a fly’s version of the game Frogger. You bob and weave a fluttering fly between two lanes of oncoming traffic, making every attempt to avoid a gooey windshield laden demise. To move your fly just tilt your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad from side to side. The cars come toward you quickly and in varying intervals, and it’s your job to safely slide around and between them without making contact.

Avoiding cars seems like it’d be a simple task. After all, the graphics are majorly old school, the cars are majorly old school, and all you have to do is tilt left-to-right to avoid them, so there’s no possible way that you won’t be able to dominate this game for hours on end. Right? Well, think again. I literally only last a minute or two at best when I play. Mainly because in order to avoid cars you’ve got to literally miss every aspect of the car. If you are within a hairs width of the car mirror you’re donesky!

As mentioned cars approach you one and two at a time and in varying speeds and intervals. As cars get closer they actually slow down, which would lead you to believe that it makes the game easier, but in fact it makes it harder. How can this be? Well, when one car begins to slow down, another catches up. When this happens the car on the left for example could arrive first, but the car on the right ends up taking the lead at the last second requiring you to alter your approach at a moments notice. In instances like this the window in which you can avoid both cars is so narrow that it requires stealthy reflexes and precision maneuvering to escape.

Overall Fly Vs. Car isn’t a game that I think everybody will love, but for some it’ll provide adequate entertainment, sufficient challenge, and for busy parents on the go it’ll keep the kids entertained. Although it’s a very basic game, in some ways it’s simplicity makes it more appealing. It’s a very kid friendly game. All it takes to play is opening the app and press the play button. It’s the kind of game you can whip out and play for 2-5 minutes at a time, try to beat your previous high score, then put away and not really think about it for several days. The other really great aspect of the game is its charitable affiliation. I’m a big fan of sharing proceeds with charities, so whether you end up loving, hating, or just finding the game OK, you can still feel good about the purchase because you’re helping provide needy kids with new toys.
