The game starts with how humans have progressed and made their presence in space by exploring new planets and other objects in the universe. Inter-space travel has resulted in space hijackers and kidnappers, and space police to control them. The game makes you the super confident and brave space cop, Kaptain Brawe. My mission was to rescue 2 alien scientists who had been kidnapped. It all sounded very serious but as I progressed the storyline became quite entertaining.

The game has been set in 4 unique planet surroundings. There are over 40 different locations in the gameplay with amazing graphics for each. So there I go jumping into the spacecraft.

Kaptain Brawe keeps switching between three characters – Brawe, Luna and Danny as he meets up with numerous other personalities. These include characters in the form of space pirates, secret agents, interstellar government and so on. The storyline goes through space conspiracy, quests and general chaos.

I could play in 2 game modes. Hard Mode – I had to choose between the hand and the magnifying glass to interact with objects on screen. Casual Mode – The hand and magnifying glass were chosen for me and there were lots of hints provided. The question mark icon proved very useful as it showed all intractable objects on the screen. Even the exits are visible as arrows on clicking the question mark. The journal at the bottom left of the screen showed a list of tasks I must finish.

The look and feel of the game is similar to the point-and-click adventure games such as Telltale games. The initial download is free but once I finished the tutorial part, a payment of $4.99 has to be made to continue the play.

To sum it up, Kaptain Brawe – A Brawe New World is a challenging yet humorous gameplay about finding items, questioning characters and combining everything perfectly to solve puzzles. It has a brilliant soundtrack and I felt as if I was watching an old adventure flick. The amazing graphics combine hand-drawn backgrounds with 3D character models. The game scores in the retro look and feel but for new age kids who are used to playing modern adventures with full voice casts will get disappointed. The company needs to bring in more innovation for a longer app life.

Flight Ultimate

One look at the screen shots for Flight Ultimate and I knew I just had to have it. When I learned that it was a flight sim with a funny twist I was even more intrigued. Unfortunately Flight Ultimate performed more like “Flight Not So Ultimate”, as it has rather limited directional control, is littered with broken English, lackluster visual effects, wacky mismatched sounds, and a humorous twist that results in surprisingly odd/ridiculous missions.

Created by iTechGen, Flight Ultimate is a bit of a tease with it’s attractive and realistic looking exterior. It’s graphics are pretty good, that’s definitely one of it’s pluses, but aside from basic flight movements it’s far from being a realistic flying experience. Directionally you can move up and down, and can bank relatively sharp turns, but unfortunately you can’t make steep vertical maneuvers, loops, or barrel rolls. The engine sounds are non-existent, there’s no way to adjust your speed, and even though you have weapons there’s no sight for aiming.

Essentially the game is made up of a series of missions that take place in a varrying array of landscapes. The first mission is called XXL COW as there is a “vicious” cow on the loose that’s terrorizing village residents with it’s abnormally stinky poop. Yeah, POOP! The object of the mission is to fly over the cow and take a picture of it. A picture of it? Yes. That’s the mission. Really. Subsequent missions are similarly strange. Mission 2 requires you to kill the XXL Cow using a fighter jet and missiles. The missiles look more like tracer bullets when fired and conveniently there’s no site or aiming mechanism so you more or less just point the nose of the plane in the general direction of the cow and tap the screen like a banshee until you hit it.

I wanted badly to love this game, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. As I played it I found myself begging for more. Give me more control, give me more freedom, give me more realistic weaponry and sounds, give me more interesting missions. Please!!! Unfortunately, aside from each level increasing in difficulty each of them was just more of the same. Odd/wacky missions, lots of misspellings and broken English, cheesy sound effects, and not so realistic flying.

Pros:

Graphics are pretty good
If you have a wacky sense of humor you may get a kick out of the missions

Ponk

Gooey maneuverable balls, 3 game modes, and match 3+ puzzle game-play awaits in the well put together and moderately addictive Ponk. Using your finger you drag and place colored balls as they fall from the sky. The object is to stack like colored balls so they touch. When three or more balls of the same color touch they explode, often times setting of chain reactions. Each of the three game modes require a different strategy, but one thing remains constant throughout, you must match quickly and strategically if you want to survive long enough to score big.

Created by Five AM Studio, Ponk is another twist added to the popular match 3+ puzzle gaming category. The game provides you with complete control of your destiny no matter which game mode you choose; Klassik, Kaboum, or Time Attack. Klassik mode is a lot like Tetris without the variety of shapes. The object is to prevent the balls from stacking to the top of the screen so as you can guess the more balls you can eliminate, the more levels you pass and the more points you earn. Kaboum mode is the one I probably like the most. It seems to require more strategy than the other modes. Kaboum mode is all about blowing stuff up (Uh…huh, huh…cool – Butthead). In this level you’ve got do all the same stuff as Klassik mode but in order to advance to the next level you’ve got to blow up all the padlock looking balls and mystery balls. To do so you’ve got to guide and position matching colored balls so they adequately surround the padlock and star filled balls. Sprinkled into the mix are some bombs, which you’ll want to use to enhance the power and depth of your explosion. Lastly there’s Time Attack, of which the title tells you everything. You’re working against an unforgiving clock and must dissolve like colored balls ASAP or you’re game will end really quickly.

There are some pretty cool features within the game. One of my favorites is the “more balls” option. Essentially it’s a button you can press at anytime to launch a sudden blast of balls. I get bored pretty quick so having more to do at once seems to keep me entertained. Another helpful feature is the “freeze” button. You’ve got to earn the power to freeze, but once all the green lights are full you can press it to stop all falling balls in their tracks. The freeze lasts quite a while so you have plenty of time to maneuver everything around to your advantage. Altogether there are 42 different achievements you can unlock as you play. Many of which enhance the gaming experience and help you blow up more balls with less effort.

Overall Ponk is a nicely put together match 3+ puzzler with decent replayability and a smooth interface. I didn’t find it to be as addictive as some of the other puzzlers I’ve played, but it definitely is a quality game worth trying out. The touchiness and responsiveness of the game are great, which should keep both youngins and older peeps pretty engaged. If you’ve been looking to replace one of your oldy but goody puzzlers it’s worth checking out Ponk.

Assault Commando

The game takes place deep in the South American Jungle were serious trouble is brewing. Albrecht Braun has formed an army capable of overthrowing whole governments and ruling the world and up till now it appears nothing can stop him. Your mission is to go deep behind enemy lines to put an end to the madness before it spreads any further. You’ve teamed up with long-time war buddy Jack Gunfire to stomp out the enemy and save the world.

Created by 3D Magic Kft., Assault Commando is a seriously badass game. The game controls are simply flawless. It feels so natural as you sprint through the jungle, weaving in and out of trees for cover, masking your advance behind buildings, and mowing down enemies with rapid fire. Jeeps equipped with heavy artillery roll up and put you on blast, while infantry come out of the wood works, chasing you around and spraying automatic fire as they charge. You must stay moving at all times while firing toward targets with the utmost precision. It’s imperative that you can engage attackers from all angles at a moments notice. The joystick style controls give you the freedom you need to make this possible, but it’s up to you to harness your inner badass to make it happen.

On top of the seriously fun on-foot battles you also get to ride along in sweet shallow water boats through winding jungle streams and open up serious cans of whoop ass from behind the wheel of kick ass tanks. I mean seriously, this game has pretty much everything that I want out of a jungle style war game. The explosions are big and the sounds of battle are extremely realistic. It’s the closest thing to an actual arcade experience that I’ve played in quite sometime. The only thing I’d love to change is where you currently ride along in the boats and tanks it’d be way sweeter if you could actually drive ‘em.

If you couldn’t already tell I’m loving this game and think it’s definitely worth the download. It’s a decent value at it’s current $1.99 price, and I promise you that you won’t be disappointed with your purchase. I still have a ways to go before defeating the game, but so far I’m hooked and plan to stick with it to the end. I’d love to see the game continue to be improved upon to make it even more sensational. Some of the menus are ok, probably could be made to look more high-tech, it’d be cool to have more levels, some blood and guts folded in, and as mentioned being able to drive the vehicles would make it much sweeter, but as far as the graphics, game-play, and sounds go, they’re pretty much top notch.

Ninja Wars

Ninja Wars is a 2D slash ‘em game filled with throwing stars, samurai swords, somersault jumps, lots of enemies and killer bosses. From the outside looking in it seems it has everything you’d ever want in a ninja battle game. So why didn’t it get a perfect rating? Well, even with all the proper assets, Ninja Wars lacks responsiveness, combo moves, and engaging game-play.

Created by Goldfish, Ninja Wars offers everything aesthetically that we’ve come to expect out of ninja games. It has a nice variety of bad guys that gang up on you at every pass. You’ve got to fend of your attackers from in front and behind, invoking your shield to block their blows at the proper time and busting out your samurai sword to slash them until their blood runs cold. Enemies begin their attack from afar by tossing throwing stars. You must bob and weave your way around incoming fire as you strategically position yourself to vanquish your enemies.

Levels are played from left to right and for the most part are pretty short. If you survive the first 2-3 waves of enemies you’ll likely cruise your way to the finish. Most levels end rather uneventfully unless they include a boss. Levels that include bosses more or less become a maylay of fighting as you must fight the boss and waves of enemies at the same time. For me personally I found the game-play to be quite monotonous and even when bosses were added it wasn’t very engaging.

In this game you can move upward and downward as well as forward and backward. You can jump, flail your sword, and toss throwing stars. Unfortunately, I don’t feel like that’s enough action to make the game fun. I desperately would love to be able to mix in some kicks and punches, and perhaps be able to leap over enemies. Unfortunately the maneuvering in the game feels very limited and restrictive and for that reason it makes the game feel like more of the same, regardless of how far you advance in the game.

There is a taste of upgradeability in Ninja Wars. You can earn additional skills, and can upgrade some of your weapons, but to be honest none of these really enhance the game very much. I’m one of the biggest fans of ninja games but to me Ninja Wars is lacking fun factor. I’d find Ninja Wars much more entertaining if the responsiveness and variety of movements was enhanced. The ability to mix up moves with kicks, punches, sword combos, and more would make it much more engaging. The other area that would help improve the overall feel of the game would be addressing the menus. Currently the game has a very broken up feel. The setup process for the game is a little awkward and the in-game menus seem out of place. I like the overall idea of Ninja Wars, but for me personally, it’s not one I plan to keep playing.

Pros:

30 levels, 6 bosses, lots of enemies to fight

Cons:

Game-play gets monotonous, each level gets harder, but isn’t very unique
Limited character movement, and lack of combos leaves you wanting more
Menus are awkward, lots of broken English littered throughout

Jungly Jump

Jungly Jump is a physics based strategy game involving Squaty and Spikey, you’re friendly neighborhood rabbit and porcupine. The two of them are hungry and to get dinner they shake the fruit trees and then hurl themselves high into the air to grab their prize. Squaty the rabbit has all the hops and uses them to leap from branch to branch, climbing higher and higher in the tree. Spikey stays put on a teeter-totter and when Squaty gets high enough in the tree Spikey signals him to leap onto the teeter-totter hurling Spikey high into the air so he grab dinner for them both.

Created by MEDL Mobile Inc., Jungly Jump is a game based on strategy, velocity, and angles. Unlike typical physics games where you commit to an angle and then just draw back a slingshot as far as you want before you launch, Jungly Jump requires you to not only pick an angle, but to tap the screen while Squaty is moving. To get the velocity that you need for your launch angle to be affective you’ve got to time Squaty’s launch perfectly. This added wrinkle makes the game more challenging than one might expect at first glance.

To advance past levels you need to collect enough fruit to move on. Earlier stages are quite basic, and after a few goes you’ll get through them fairly easily. It’s not long before the patterns of fruit become more difficult to navigate, and in addition become littered with inedible items that can both help and hurt. Coconuts serve as a barrier that ricochet you away when you touch them, honeycombs must be knocked down like a wrecking ball and can’t be penetrated with a single launch, cactus function like Velcro and when Spikey hits it he sticks, and worms that when touched cause the surrounding fruit to go rotten. These pesky preventers are not shy in where they lye, so for players that advance deep into the game, extremely challenging physics puzzles await you.

Thankfully there are some bonus items in Jungly Jump that can help make collecting fruit around the pesky bugaboos a bit easier. Mushrooms act as springboards and repel you in the opposite direction when you hit them, anti-gravity sends you ascending upward when you touch it, bombs take out pesky honeycombs that block your way, triple power, grow power, and bomb power all give you an extra try, as well as enhance Spikey’s effectiveness in getting knocking down barricades and collected large amounts of fruit.

Jungly Jump looks cuddly enough to be a 3 year olds best friend, but beneath it’s child-like exterior is a flat out tough game. Offering 12 different environments and 100 levels, you’re sure to get many hours and days of playability. Currently I’m only 17 levels deep and am already scratching my head wondering how to get past. Determining where in the tree to launch Squaty gets increasingly difficult as you get further in the game. At first I could launch him from the top over of the tree over and over again and would find a way to get past each level. That’s not the case later in the game because it becomes more and more critical that you take multiple angles to attack a puzzle. Many times you need to finesse your way in through a small window. Jungly Jump is a nice new addition to the physics based puzzle genre and without a doubt is worth the download. It’s well developed, has nice graphics, the puzzles are all very different, and it’s without a doubt a solid challenge for even the most skilled physics puzzler.

Pros:

Friendly theme makes it great for both kids and adults
Game is very challenging and has lots of levels
Open Feint global leaderboard so you can see how you stack up
Pretty addictive once you’ve gotten 10 or so levels deep

Cons:

Might be a little hard for people 10 and under

Tomb Rush

In the action puzzler Tomb Rush the pharaoh’s tomb is under attack by a relentless swarm of monsters and it’s your job to protect the pharaoh’s remains at all costs. Your only means of defense is to kill anything and everything in site, but the problem is the weaponry at your disposal is limited. Starting with as little as a wall mounted crossbow you must pluck monsters with precision shots. Your propensity to kill determines the length of your game and the number of defense mechanisms at your disposal. Strategy, timing, and coordination are key to earning big points and successfully protecting the tomb.

Created by Volcano Computer Tech Co., Tomb Rush is an action puzzler that at first may seem a bit blah, but after you get the hang of it quickly becomes a very fun to play and tough to put down game. The entire game takes place inside of the pharaoh’s tomb. A flood of one-track minded portly cavemen charge into the tomb, in no particular order, in an attempt to seize and conquer the tomb. You can unlock up to 7 “powerful properties”, like trap doors, candles that function as flame throwers, spring loaded platforms, lightening esque bolts of energy, and more to defend the tomb. As mentioned you start with only a crossbow, but quickly earn new properties based on number of kills. When you see a hovering key pop up you’ll want to touch it ASAP as it activates a new property.

The more properties you earn the better. They essentially serve as back up defenses for when monsters slip through you first, second, third, etc. lines of defense. When monsters approach just touch any of your properties to use them. Some take longer to “reload” than others so you want to make sure you time their use perfectly. The crossbow and the spring board fire pretty rapidly, but the trapdoor and candle take a while to reload and if you set them off too early the monsters will blow right past them unscathed. A great fall back weapon is the pharaoh power. If you touch the pharoah and then swipe your finger across the screen it sends a bolt of lightening jutting toward your target. It takes a while to use this one though so you pretty much only want to use it as a last resort.

Tomb Rush is a super simple concept that somehow became ultra addictive the more you play it. At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it because I played it a half a dozen times or so and thought to myself the game was kinda boring. But apparently that’s only because I stunk at it. Once I got the hang of it and started unlocking more and more weapons and defenses and was mowing down wave after wave of monsters I thought to myself this game is pretty sweet! After getting on a roll and unveiling a hard to kill boss that ushered in newer and uglier monsters I was hooked!

Tomb Rush builds on itself as you play and demands 100% attention to detail and precision timing. Monsters come at you straight on in the early stages of the game, but eventually they come at you from multiple angles. Having the ability to defend against waves of enemies from multiple angles for sustained periods of time is key to scoring big. Once you get to that point in the game it’s extremely hard to put down. If you enjoy simpler game concepts that are challenging and you can turn to at a moments notice from some instant gratification, then you’ll really enjoy Tomb Rush.

Pros:

Offers good replayability; really addictive once you give it some time
Great game for both children and adults
Games can last seconds to minutes depending on skill level; great time waster

Croak!

The life of a tree frog seems like utter bliss. All you’ve gotta do is climb trees, spit out some ribbits here and there, and snag unsuspecting insects to fatten your belly right? Wrong! When you play Croak! the life of a tree frog seems like utter chaos. Try bobbing and weaving around striking venomous snakes, sticky tongued frog leg loving chameleons, and nimble lemurs as you fire your tongue at tasty winged tidbits. It’s no simple task and certainly not The Life of Riley.

Created by Rather Odd Computing, Croak! reminds me a lot of Sticky Licky, except with a number of twists that make it a bit more interesting and difficult. Typically in games like this you just fire off a sticky tongue and real in insect after insect, while trying to avoid things like bees and other prickly buggers. Well, in Croak! you’ve got to catch food, but you need to avoid random frog eating predators that appear docile and then strike when you least expect it. To avoid getting eaten you must preemptively tilt your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad to hop your frog out of the way. The further you get in the game the more sly and unpredictable the frog eaters become.

If you’re a fan of 2D arcade games then you’re going to enjoy Croak! The challenge within the game leans less toward the difficulty of capturing the insects and more toward remaining aware of the imminent strike from a predator and you’re ability to swiftly avoid their attack while remaining efficient at capturing your dinner. The quicker you can master the multi-tasking nature of the game the further you’ll advance. As you become better you’ll unlock more and more themes, tree frog species, dinner options, and blood thirsty predators.

After a few goes with Croak! it was clear to me that I’ve got to put in a little more practice before I can sit atop the Open Feint global leaderboard. The game comes across as being really easy until you’ve waded a few levels deep, after that it begins to bear teeth. I zoomed through the first eight levels in a matter of minutes, but soon after hit a bit of a snag. My three lives dissapeard in the blink of an eye as it seemed the snake had figured out my every move. I elected to adopt a float like a butterfly method, keeping my frog constantly on the move. This worked for a few more levels, but after a while it mattered not. The snake operates under a cloak of unpredictability and strikes swiftly. Once you’ve reached a certain point in the game luck is out the door and you’ve really got to stay focused on both dinner and the snake, timing your every move perfectly in order to earn points and stay alive at the same time.

Overall Croak! is a very fun arcade style game. The first half a dozen or so levels feel a bit mundane, but after that you’ve really gotta step up your game. It’s fast paced and great for picking up and killing short windows of time. The graphics and sounds are decent and the game becomes quite addictive once you’ve unlocked a few frogs, predators, and themes. It’s definitely a great value for the $0.99 price point and well worth the download.

Good value for the price

Cons:

Starts out a bit easy, need to get 8 or more levels deep for it to get interesting
Feels a bit repetitive over time, playing in small bursts is key

There’s nothing to say about the graphics except that they’re perfection, and with the iPad sitting right in front of you, it feels like you’re driving a real car. Real Racing HD has such a vast amount of gaming options and combinations, it would be impossible to enumerate them all here. Suffice it to say that you will probably never complete the game and almost certainly never get tired of it. This is a must purchase app for your iPad, and if you’re not an iPad owner yet (I’d suggest you get one) then get the original Real Racing for iPhone and iPod Touch.

Watch out! Colin is on the loose and he can defy gravity! Gravity Runner is an amazingly addictive retro inspired game that’s a classic in the making and an excellent addition to anyone’s arsenal of apps.

Created by We Are Colin Ltd., Gravity Runner is a race against the clock where Colin, an adventure loving daredevil charges through levels laced with deadly obstacles. He leaps over gorges, rows of spikes, and other death inducing doozies that surround him from both above and below. Colin possesses the power to reverse gravity which allows him to overcome challenges that non one else can. To succeed in Gravity Runner you must master the ability to reverse gravity at will, and time the transition perfectly so you can overcome all obstacles in your path.

Gravity Runner is almost like playing two games at the same time. Think of Super Mario Bros but with the ceiling being in play too. In the game you basically sprint non-stop across the screen, needing to leap high and far to clear rows of deadly spikes and bottomless gorges. Some obstacles simply can’t be cleared without reversing gravity so with a double tap of the screen you’ll send yourself soaring toward the ceiling. All obstacles from above function the same as the one’s below, just in reverse. To get to the end you’ve got to perfect the double tap motion, timing it just right so you can safely land on solid ground, whether it’s above or below. The slightest misstep and you’re toast.

Reversing gravity is a must to clear every level, so don’t think you can skirt by without it. I found the reverse gravity twist of the game very entertaining and curiously challenging. Because you’re moving at a fast pace and many obsticles don’t show their ugly face until after you’ve already committed to a move, the ability to double tap and reverse gravity only compounds the decision making process required for the game. It’s often that you’ll find your fingers fighting your brain while playing. It totally rocks and in my mind makes it stand out from many of the other traditional retro runner games.

I know what you’re thinking. The graphics of Gravity Runner look so weak. I’m playing 3D augmented reality stuff, why would I want to step back in time to 1986? Let me tell ya. I said the same stuff to myself, but after a couple minutes with the game I realized 20 minutes had passed. Gravity Runner is seriously fun and without a doubt worth every penny. If you’re looking for a fast-paced game that’s ideal for killing some time, don’t hesitate to download this app.
