Here’s one just in time for Halloween! Talking Halloween Pumpkin Billy by Cloud M1 is sure get the kids fired up for this haunted holiday. The app combines a lot of the same interactive character features that we’ve seen before in other applications, but all wrapped up in a “Halloween theme”. Don’t be surprised when you open the door to a group of ghoulish kids in search of candy and one of them breaks out this app with a recording of the Talking Halloween Pumpkin Billy requesting that you hand over ALL the candy in the house at once! DwahHaHaHa! (**piano music que from Friday the 13th begins to play in background**)

The Talking Halloween Pumpkin Billy will repeat anything you say in a hilarious voice. Make sure you speak clearly and hold the phone somewhat close before talking. The lead character is armed with a knife in one hand and a bottle in the other. Tapping specific places or items on the screen will give you different reactions. Touch him and he will either swing his knife at you or hiccup. Touch his drink and he will begin to ramble. Touch the tombstone and he will tell you what happened. Background sound effects along with random character movements and gestures add to the experience.

The Talking Halloween Pumpkin Billy will react to your interactions and the scene around him. Tap the moon in the background and everything becomes dark. Access a variety of menu buttons at the bottom that initiate specific reactions. Some of the buttons transform the talking pumpkin into different characters altogether. Leave him unattended too long and the pumpkin will begin rambling, laugh, or simply move about.

The app looks crisp on the iPhone 4 Retina Display. It has vibrant colors, a clean and easy-to-use menu layout on the bottom portion of the screen, cool haunting background scenery, and of course the animated talking pumpkin with expressive facial animations and fluid body movements.

This app is prone to lose it’s luster after the Halloween season is over, but kids should get a kick out of the interactive features and quirky character traits Pumpkin Billy has to offer. It should be a hit with the youngsters, specially those that enjoy going Trick or Treating. I see this app being used as a vessel for what kids really want to say as they walk up to the doorsteps on Halloween: HURRY UP AND GIVE ME SOME CANDY SO I CAN HOLD UP THE NEXT HOUSE!!

Here’s a Freebie that all car enthusiasts should own. CarBuzz by wapit ltd. is packed with useful information, pictures, news, and reviews of pretty much every auto manufacture and model on the market. Car lovers will rejoice with so much information to access in one place.

CarBuzz proves to be a great resource if you are shopping for a new car, or if you just want to browse around to see the latest and greatest concept cars prepped to make their debut. The app does a great job with menu layout and overall design, which makes accessing information easy and fast. The main menu has a list of the most current car news organized by date. Scan though small thumbnail’s followed by the manufacturer name and a brief article title. Once you select a specific news story, leaf though the article, high resolution photos, and find related articles pertaining to the subject at hand. A quick swipe to the left brings on new pages.

A simple “main” tab and “cars” tab in the upper left and right corners make it easy to get back to the main menu at all times. Accessing the “cars” tab brings up a large list with a “buzz” catagory and a “manufactures” category. Find the latest auto reviews and upcoming cars to hit the market in the buzz section. The reviews are pretty in depth and mainly focus on covering brand new auto’s on the market. High resolution stills, and detailed breakdowns, performance specs, and prices are all included.

In term of manufactures, this app has ‘em all. From the exotic to the every day driver, CarBuzz has it covered. Once a manufacture has been selected, scroll through the different models, browse thumbnails, gather information, pricing, and performance details. Again, the simplicity of the menu layouts really make the overall use a pleasant experience. One interesting feature is the ability to add a personal comment on a specific car by logging in to Facebook.

A strange thing that stood out was the formatting of the images. When scanning through an article the images appeared to be larger than the screen size so only half of the picture could be viewed at one time. You have to flick the page back and forth to see the full render of the picture. It’s great that high resolution images are included but it would be nice to incorporate “pinch and zoom” functionality so you have control over what part of the high rez image you’d like to view. Another issue that popped up was the occasional “missing image”. Certain pictures would not download or update, leaving a blank screen.

In all I really found this app useful and definitely plan to use it in the future. Being a car enthusiast, I must say that having one place to conveniently access all this auto information is quite handy. It’s worth noting that this app only features new or “coming soon” cars so you will not be able research older vehicles. With the free price tag CarBuzz is one app you’ll want to take for a spin.

Here is a MUST-HAVE Utilities application for your new iPhone 4. If you have any other flashlight-type apps on your phone, get rid of them now because iHandy Flashlight Free trumps ‘em all. With a list of functional and practical features, as well as a decent selection of different lighting types to select from, iHandy Flashlight Free is the one to pick if you are ever in need of lighting up a situation.

There are many reasons why this app reigns supreme over some of the other competitors in the App Store. First and foremost, iHandy Flashlight Free has made use of the iPhone 4′s built in LED camera light so you can now use the device as an actual source of shining light (*note this is only an iPhone 4 feature). It’s pretty bright and serves as the perfect utility if you’re in the dark and need to shed some light on a subject. In addition to this, one other feature that really stood out was the ability to activate the LED light as well as the screen light by simply shaking the iPhone 4. This makes for a quick and intuitive experience if you need some light fast, a simple shake and LET THERE BE LIGHT!

The main menu in iHandy Flashlight Free is a simple grid with 12 boxes: 9 boxes contain a different light, then you’ve got one box that promotes the paid Pro version, an info box for basic user control settings and instructions, and finally an iHandy Widgets box for promoting more apps created by the developer. Each light box has a cool blue/glowing icon followed by the name of each light. Pick from Lights, Strobe, Trippy, S.O.S, Emergency, Motion Control, Spiral, Glow Sticks, and Neon. Tap the box and you will get a quick preview. You can actually preview all of them at once if you slide your finger across each icon. The box flips around, displaying a preview of the light in action.

Once you have picked a light you have a few user controls. Hold your finger on the screen, then drag up or down to adjust the brightness of the light. You can also tap the custom color icon below and create any color you wish, then save it. Swipe or hit the arrow buttons left/right to pull up different colors and lighting patterns. The S.O.S light or the Emergency light may actually have some serious use, while the Trippy, Glow Sticks, and Spiral lights are more for fun. The regular white light is pretty bright, though you will get even more out of the screen light by making sure your brightness setting is turned up all the way in the iPhone’s Settings menu. Honestly though, you’ll be using the back LED light as your main lighting source. The screen light can be used to create a softer, more subdued ambiance.

While the free version is a great tool, you do have to deal with the ads, but there is a Pro version that gets rid of that. The developers also have thrown in over 60 more lights to select from if in fact you do want to upgrade to the paid version. The Pro addition includes some pretty cool new lights like a candle, lighter, Incandescent & Energy Saving light bulbs, more neon signs, and finally some additional skins for the glow sticks. All this at the $0.99 price-point is a good bargain. iHandy Flashlight Free is definitely a recommended utility app as well as the Pro version. With so many different utility apps to select from it’s important to make sure you have the right tool for the job and I think iHandy Flashlight Free is the most versatile and functional one.

So here’s a pretty slick new game released by Soulbit7 that brings a classic alien invasion directly into your personal living space. In Look-Up you must join Earth’s resistance and fight off pesky alien invaders by shooting down UFO fighter crafts before they get all up in your grill! Wherever you look a UFO’s right around the corner, though in this one it’s not just “around the corner”, you’ll need to scan a full 360 degree’s to ensure mankind’s survival.

First off I must warn you: Do not play this game in public unless you want to be utterly ridiculed. Why? Because this game uses augmented reality, which basically means you play the game in your real surroundings. The game relies on the iPhone’s camera to display a backdrop as a setting for battle. This brings a realism to gameplay that is simply unmatched. Defend Earth from invading UFO’s in your living room, outside, or in the office – wherever you are, they are coming to get ya! I mentioned earlier not to play this in public because you must fully interact with this game by shooting UFO’s all around you. Rapidly scanning your surroundings by panning up, down, left and right with frantic jolts of the iPhone will have the casual bystander startled to say the least. BUT, this sure does make for some interesting gameplay!

Look-Up allows you to choose from two play modes: 360 or 180. 360 mode requires you to stand up and play in a full 360 degrees: twirl all the way around and scan the skies for invaders. 180 mode is geared more for sitting down and defending a frontal attack, this only uses 180 degrees of playable space, (starting from about your waist area, up to above your head). In terms of game modes, Look-Up has three: “Invasion” mode featuring 9 levels in which you need to battle against the alien invaders, opening up new features along the way, “Hold M’ Up” mode for non-stop shooting action that basically tests how long you can survive, and finally “Multiplayer” mode: enlist an army to fight the wave of alien attackers by linking up with friends via bluetooth.

I really liked the overall look and theme of the menu graphics and sound effects, which all seem to be spot-on in delivering a “sci-fi like” experience. The interface is pretty basic and user friendly. The sight (target) area is directly in the middle of the screen, followed by the right red button for regular weapon fire, and the left blue button for Tractor Beam and H-bomb Launcher. The energy bar is also displayed in the center of the screen along with the enemy tracker which indicates the amount of UFO’s engaging in the attack. You’ll find the enemy tracker to come in handy as most of the time the UFO’s are hovering over head or flying in from the side for a surprise attack out of sight.

One feature that seemed to be missing was the ability to pause the game. Also attempting to lock-in on your target at times can be a bit cumbersome and erratic. Some UFO’s are in plain sight so adjusting accordingly to line up the target and take them out works as expected, though other times they seem to disappear, or rapidly move outside the norm, making targeting tough. At times it seems the UFO will always hover “just outside” your target range no matter now fast you move the sight into place.

But all in all the gameplay is pretty entertaining and engaging. This augmented reality genre is becoming a great new avenue for game developers and Look-Up’s UFO theme and gameplay fits this style perfectly. Scanning the skies for invading aliens and using your actual surroundings as part of the game is a really slick concept. I look forward to future updates and would definitely recommend this game if you are into augmented reality gaming or shooter-style games.

Talking Tom Cat

This little furry character is hilarious! Talking Tom Cat is an Entertainment app developed by Outfit7 featuring a 3D cat living inside your iPhone. This cat will repeat everything you say with his own high pitched cat vocals. Matching mouth movements of the recording, along with the occasional yawn, blink, and other lively gestures add to the realism and make it that much more entertaining.

You can interact directly with Tom the cat by poking, petting, punching and tail pulling. Each action will get a different reaction whether it’s a purrrr, or an OUCH! Strike Tom one too many times and he falls to the floor in dizzy fashion. Additional props include a glass directly beside Tom. When tapped, it’s filled with milk for our crazy cat to chug. If you leave Tom for too long unattended, he will start getting bored then yawn or sneeze.

While the interaction with Tom is an added benefit, the real value is the accuracy in which Tom mimics your every word. You’ll know when Tom is listening (recording) because he will turn an ear up, along with his paw. The lip movement along with that crazy cat voice repeating every word is pretty amusing. I was surprised by just how much the app will pick up. Any surrounding noise will be recorded. I did a test by letting Tom listen to some Pavarotti on my computer and sure enough he belted out every word just like the opera singer, just with a slightly higher octave. The app sound effects are fun and his little growls add to his quirky self. I also saw that when Tom “talked,” or played back the recording, the pitch was appropriate to the pitch of the speaker; meaning, a lower-voice speaker resulted in a lower pitch, whereas a higher voice resulted in a higher voice, as opposed to a one generic pitch for the cat.

Another really cool feature is that you can actually record up to 30 seconds of Tom in action. After the recording is done directly upload that to YouTube or Facebook or send a direct email of the video. This a great feature for sharing your cat alter ego. Send your friends a message delivered by Tom and it will surely get a few laughs.
One drawback are the ads, but for a freebie that’s something that can be easily overlooked considering the comical nature of this app . Taking Tom Cat brings entertainment to the iPhone at NO Charge. You can’t beat that. There are similar apps out but none at the free price point that offer this level of quality, features, and flat-out fun.

DIACARTA

Diacarta by Squnch, LLC is a cleverly designed, yet simple-to-use productivity application that helps get your life in order. This noteworthy app puts a new spin on how to manage your daily activities. If you are a visual person like I am then you’ll love Diacarta that much more; its main point of focus revolves around placing visual icons around the clock to keep your life in check.

Diacarta is quite different from other daily planners. First off you are presented with two separate pages and clocks for each day (one for A.M. & one for P.M). A simple swipe of the finger toggles between the A.M. & P.M. time frames. This alone is a creative and unique way to juggle your daily tasks. If you wanted to go even further back or forward in time you would simply continue to swipe left or right accordingly, which would take you through the days one by one. Of course you also have a calendar view if you need to get to a specific date.

Users can select from pre-created icons and drop them around the clock by the appropriate time. There are a ton of cool little icons to pick from; icons like a coffee mug, telephone, golf ball, fork and knife, airplane, even an arm pumping iron for those gym sessions you’ve been meaning to schedule. If by chance the app doesn’t have an icon that suites the subject that’s OK because the developers also included a blank/generic icon just for the occasion.

All events you enter have a name and location area along with start time, end time and a details section where you can log notes. Just double tap the icon to bring up the details page, then save.

“Monthly view” brings up the full calendar so you can manage larger timeframes with ease. Any day with scheduling information gets a symbol next to the date so you can easily tell which days have events.

The design scheme and overall layout of Diacarta gets an A+. Its detailed icons, smooth color palette, and button placement all work well, creating a friendly atmosphere that’s fun to use and efficient at the same time. Clean, simple, and effective. It took me like 5 minutes to figure out how to use the app, then it was off to the races as I began to fill up my calendar with event icons.

Now Diacarta is one slick app, but there are still some features that I’d love to see included at some point in the near future. The main user related issue I see is that you cannot set up a repeat for daily or weekly. Also it would be nice if it could sync with your calendar app and tie into sounding alarms – not sure if that’s even possible, but it came to mind. Diacarta has no instruction page but it doesn’t really need one either as it’s pretty intuitive for the most part. Finally, there is a logo button in the lower right hand corner that does not seem to do anything when pressed. (**UPDATE**: The star actually allows you to mark events as completed, click the star button then the icon to mark as completed.)

Overall Diacarta delivers an engaging and unique experience for your daily planning needs. The developers have merged usability with a creative concept and this can be a potent combination. Future updates should make this app one of the best in its class. If you are looking for a new approach at staying organized and want something that’s fast, visually based, and fun, this is one app I’d recommend.
