Apparently Pinterest is every woman’s dream!

Before we even delve into the review of this app you should know we made it a point to have one of our male associates review it. The thinking being the longer we could keep the women staffers in the dark the better as this platform seems to be so engrossing to the female persuasion all else stops. This would be very detrimental to us as the women in our lives run everything in the first place so we can’t imagine what would happen if they knew Pinterest was in the house. Now the cats out of the bag.

With that said the app delivers just like the platform. It rolls everything up in a nice tight bundle and smells better than the scented potpourri in the halls. This is not just another platform hoping to jump on the social media bandwagon, Pinterest has hit the ground running and is currently the fastest growing social media in history. It appears to be a combination of both Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr. In a sense that users are able to view pictures in a scrapbook format neatly categorized according to their preferred niche areas.

Some pins to admire

Essentially, this means users can pin up their interests for other users to view. Thus the name of the app, Pinterest.

To join Pinterest, users have to obtain an invite from an existing member. Unfortunately at the time of this review, an invite was not granted and so this review will focus on the aspects that are available for all to see.

Great for showing off the gowns

Think of Pinterest as a message board similar to the many different niche forums scattered across the internet. Replace the threads within with posts similar to that of Instagram, and sort them in a format similar to Tumblr’s scrapbook design. After that, add in Twitter’s timeline method of presentation and you have Pinterest.

Despite being a social network, there really is not much social interaction on this app. Pinterest serves more as a marketing tool, drawing viewers and audiences to products whether intended or not. As a relatively young site compared to the heavyweights in the industry, the success and appeal of Pinterest remains to be seen. In the meantime, why not give it a go and see how you like it for yourself?

The objective of the game is simple, knock the barrels out of the hangar by launching crates at them before the freight doors come crashing. It sounds easy, but when the game decides to mash things up a little by adding obstacles to block the way as well as lowering the number of crates you have, things start to get tricky.

To start off, the game places a varying amount of barrels near the hanger door. You are given a certain amount of crates to shoot at the barrels to topple them overboard before the doors close. The game ends if you run out of crates or if the door slams shut. Why you have to do so is not explained, but nevertheless the game provides good entertainment.

In essence, Barrel Toss is one of those “high score games” where your objective as the player is to accumulate as many points as possible. Graphics are delivered with what is reminiscent of early 3D games, with crude edges and slightly pixilated details. Controls consist of a directional pad and a shoot button, which are very simple to maneuver.

Points in the game can be accumulated to purchase additional weapons, so players are not limited to shooting mere crates. This brings an element of surprise to the game as the hidden weapons are not made known at all. Think of it as a lottery, but without knowing the prizes.

One negative aspect of the game would be that there is no limit to where your control pads can take you. You can move out of the hanger to the abyss beyond and continue trudging towards the nothingness and nothing will happen except maybe a few glitches.

But either way, as a free app, Barrel Roll is a must to download. Say goodbye to boringly long waits for the bus, or sluggish train rides.

Children’s Bible, created by BCNmultimedia is a well developed app containing comic books about biblical stories. This app is targeting young children between the ages of 7 – 13. It’s an educational avenue for children, put in an easy to understand format. The price of the app is FREE, though please note that you have to purchase additional packs to make the app worth while.

The illustrations are pretty detailed and the navigation is quite simple to figure out while also providing a slick way to get through the scenes. Tapping the screen to the right advances you to the next frame, though the actual transition from one scene to another animates by shifting, scanning and zooming across the page, making for a nifty scene change. Tapping the center of the screen takes you to the controls menu, which is basically a visual menu of the comic that allows you to scan through each page for reference. The app also allows you to pinch and zoom into hard to read text areas.

The Bible is meant to be read by a more mature, older audience (in general terms), so having this app tailors the teachings of the bible in comic book form and makes this not only an appropriate app but also a spiritually enlightening one that’s also entertaining in the process.

Children’s Bible comes with one free story, the “Birth Of Jesus”. This comic is 4 pages long and tells the story of the angel appearing to Mary, the search for a room at an inn, the birth in a manger and the shepherds visit. Readers can purchase additional comics and activities from within the app for $2.99 (at the time we reviewed the app there was a Christmas sale, making the cost $1.99). VAT and Discount is a handy finance app that allows you to calculate the percentage difference between two amounts. Developed by i-App.it, VAT and Discount is divided into five categories: Calculating Discount, VAT Calculator, Increase Percent, Percentage Difference, and European VAT rates. Two clicks on the iPhone gets you the calculation, making for a very quick result.

VAT and Discount has an easy-to-use menu design: You have small navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen containing the five calculation categories. Simply click on the button to access that specific category. Once the calculator is up, all you have to do is enter a top value like Amount, Gross Amount, or Initial Amount. Then a bottom value like Percentage of Discount, VAT Rate, Percentage of Increase, or Final Amount. Click the calculate button and presto! It’s that easy.

One of the good things about VAT and Discount is the fact that it can be used with no Internet connection. This is great if you are in a location with no Internet connection but need to pull some quick numbers. I was recently in a shopping mall that had ZERO Internet connection. This mall had some great After-Christmas sales going on: 50, 60, even 70% off certain products. I was able to use VAT and Discount to find out the exact sales percentage off select items in like five seconds, which really came in handy.

The app is currently FREE, making it a good selection if you are in need of accessing quick calculations, though the developer has introduced small advertisements that pop up. All in all, VAT and Discount performs as advertised. It’s one of those apps that provides a simple yet convenient service. There is also a table to see the VAT in other countries, making it a versatile ally when traveling.

Part of the problem with golfing is that you can’t see your own swing, and to get professional help costs you and arm and a leg. The iNSTA-PRO iPhone app turns an iPhone 3G S into a virtual golf teaching machine. It comes with slick features and an assortment of tools that’ll help you video tape, analyze, document, and improve your swing, all directly from your iPhone.

The iNSTA-PRO app allows you to record and analyze your swing from multiple angles so you’re able to get a good visual on your overall swing technique. The app comes with drawing tools that help you analyze and improve on key swing fundamentals such as setup, head and ball position, takeaway, swing plane, width, and arch, weight transfer, release, and follow through. There are circles that you can use to measure angles and to highlight areas that you need to keep still during your swing such as your head and back knee. There are lines that you can insert at any angle that help you analyze things such as knee and head position, shaft and shoulder angles, and swing plane. Alright, let’s get down to business. I’ve been playing golf for most of my life. I worked as a cart boy for 5 years, played for my high school golf team, am a member of a country club, and have been known to wager a couple of greenbacks on a round from time-to-time. Although I’m not a pro, I’m very familiar with golf techniques, fundamentals, and teaching principles. Lucky for me, three of my good friends are certified PGA teaching professionals one of which played on the Senior PGA Tour for a brief stint. Because of this I get VIP access to the video equipment at my country club. The iNSTA-PRO app literally has all of the same tools that equipment does. Now don’t get me wrong. The difference in camera quality is night and day, but it should be for how much my country club paid for the setup. In all honesty, you really don’t need HD quality video to adequately perform swing analysis. Just having the ability to capture and analyze your swing on any kind of video is a major help. Throw in the extra tools to mark, measure, compare, and critique your swing and it becomes a really helpful practice tool.

Unfortunately for me, a major snow storm hit the Washington, D.C. area last weekend so I wasn’t able to take The iNSTA-PRO out to the range for a full test. The best that I could do was to solicit the help of a friend, grab a club out of my bag, and let loose a couple of practice swings inside. The biggest weakness I found with the app was that without the help of a stabilization device like a table or a tripod, it was kind of difficult to keep the iPhone perfectly steady. Having a perfectly still video doesn’t hamper you from getting good feedback on your swing, but it does somewhat limit the benefit of some of the drawing tools. For example, if you’ve circled your head and your knee because you want to see if you’re keeping them still and in place throughout your swing, it’s a little harder to tell if you’re successfully doing it when your iPhone is shaking while recording. So, for best results I recommend you have something with you that you can rest the iPhone on to keep it steady while filming.

If there were something else I’d like to see added to this app it’d be a section with golf swing instructional videos. It’d be great if users could view swing fundamentals videos and then compare them side-by-side with their own swing videos. All in all, I found the The iNSTA-PRO app to be fairly comprehensive, easy to use, and thought it worked pretty well. To be able to enjoy all of the apps features you’ll need to have an iPhone 3G S. If used properly I can see this app being a nice tool to have with you the next time you practice your golf swing.

The popular online logic based puzzle game Strimko hits the iPhone and iPod Touch app market with a bang. To put it simply this game sets a new bar for logic based puzzle apps. Strimko is fun, addictive, challenging, rich with features, jam packed with brain twisting logic puzzles, all packed into one extremely user friendly interface that’s been well thought out and is sprinkled with “nice-to-have” features that help make the game experience exceptional. It’s the type of game that you pick up and don’t put down.

If you’re not already familiar with Strimko, it’s a number based puzzle game that forces you to use logic to solve puzzles. Essentially you’re provided with a grid that contains a few prepopulated numbers, and it’s your job to complete the grid without having two of the same numbers in the same row, side by side, or in the same stream. As simple as this sounds, you’ll quickly realize it’s not. The further you advance in the game the more crucial it is that you apply sound logic with every number that you place. You’re assured not to get very far in this game if you don’t.

So what do you get with Strimko? Well, for one thing you get quality puzzles. Strimko hasn’t been developed by an inexperienced puzzle loving amateur living rent free in their parent’s basement. Strimko puzzles are all hand designed and difficulty graded by puzzle pros. It comes with over 20 hours worth of continuous gameplay comprised of 120 unique never been published puzzles, ranging from 4×4 to 7×7 patterns, 4 levels of difficulty, in game hints if you need it, and more. Not to mention, if you’re a Strimko solving machine, you can add additional puzzle packs via in-game purchasing.

One thing I noticed while playing Strimko was that every button, feature, and control were all where I wanted them to be. Quokka Studios went the extra mile when they developed this app and it shows. Not once did I find myself confused, lost, or in want of additional features. The game’s graphics, colors, sounds, instructions, layout, extras, and gameplay are all perfect. I wouldn’t change a thing. Not to mention, there’s a really slick iPod integration feature that allows you to access and control your iPod from within the app. This was easily my favorite feature. I think other apps should take note on this one. The moment I got my songs playing and submersed myself in the game, I played for nearly an hour and didn’t even know it. So far I’ve made it through 11 of the easy puzzles, leaving me 109 more puzzles to go! Not sure how for I’ll get but I definitely plan on finding out!

Whether you’re into puzzle games or not you should definitely check out Strimko. If you’re the type that likes to test drive the car before you buy it, then download the free lite version and take it for a spin. It’ll give you just enough of a taste to see what I’m talking about. I found Strimko to be extremely fun and addictive and without a doubt 100% worth the purchase. I recommend it to everyone.
