Volt

Post Rating

Here’s an app for iPhone and iPod touch that’s so shocking it’ll make your hair stand on end!  Okay, well not literally, but you get the idea.  Volt, by firezoo is a 3D lightening bolt entertainment app that let’s you generate custom colored lightening bolts on your iPhone / iPod touch.  This app looks and functions exactly like the electrostatic balls at museums minus the hair standing up part.  When you touch the screen it generates a realistic electrifying sound, vibrates, and sends energized colored bolts of lightening surging into your fingertips.  It’s simplicity and realistic effects create a wow factor that’s sure to go over big with young kids.

Volt

With Volt you can customize your virtual electrostatic experience.  You can can modify the color and number of the lightening bolts, their energy and power , and can customize the background by adjusting the size of the sphere, or replacing it with an image of your own.  There’s also a built in camera button that when pressed will generate an electrifying screen saver.  From what I can tell the most entertaining aspect of Volt is choosing a pic from your photo library and electrifying it.  In my case I took a pic of one of my nieces favorite stuffed animals, made it the background within the app, changed the bolt color to disco (which changes multiple colors) and she had an absolute blast.  I had to pry the app away from her.

Volt

Overall I found Volt to be a good app for what it’s intended to be.  The graphics, sounds, and effects are all good and the ability to add your own pic as the background and to create custom screen savers helps provide longer lasting entertainment.  Volt is without a doubt a gimmick app so don’t expect to be mystified by it for hours on end.  You can use it as a stress reliever, a silencer for the kids, and for pranks.  The developer points out that if you set the background as a screen shot of the iPhone’s home screen then you can hand your iPhone to people and scare the daylights out of them when they try to use it.  I tried it and it definitely works.  Just make sure that before you do it you’ve got the the vibrate option within the app set to on.  It generates a much better reaction.

Volt

For the $0.99 cost I feel like it delvers a decent amount of value and entertainment, especially if you’ve got kids.  Check out my little contribution below.  Fluffy fights back with a vengeance!  If I could change anything about the app it’d be to have the option to save images as the in-app background and to have the ability to post electrified images to Facebook and Twitter from within the app.  Currently when you import your own image to electrify there is no option to save it as your in-app background.  If you exit the app after selecting an image as your background it’s not there the next time you open the app.  It’s a little annoying to have to reselect an image every time you open it.  And as mentioned you can’t currently share electrified images directly from the app with your Twitter and Facebook friends.  It’d be nice to have that as an option.

Volt

Pros:

  • Looks and sounds realistic
  • Really easy to use; great for kids
  • Can choose photos from your image library to electrify
  • Can create custom lightening filled screen savers

Cons:

  • Provides limited entertainment value for adults
  • Doesn’t allow you to save an image as your in-app background; always opens to last used sphere view
  • Doesn’t currently offer Facebook and Twitter sharing
